Dr. Wisam Alwan

Dr Wisam Alwan is a Consultant Dermatologist at the world-leading St. John’s Institute of Dermatology based at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.  He graduated from St. George’s, University of London in 2009 with a double merit award.  

Dr Alwan is the Clinical Lead for Children's Dermatology at St Thomas' Hospital.  His NHS role includes clinics in general adult and paediatric Dermatology, skin cancer and tertiary hidradenitis suppurativa and cutaneous infection clinics. Wisam has extensive experience in looking after adults and children with conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea.  He also is experienced undertaking mole checks and skin cancer screening.  

He is active in research with a particular interest in the skin microbiome.  He is currently completing his PhD at King’s College London focusing on the role that commensal ‘good’ bacteria may play in treating conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.  His PhD is funded by the Medical Research Council, British Association of Dermatologists and British Skin Foundation and his research was recently recognised with prizes from the Royal Society of Medicine and the British Society of Investigative Dermatology.  

Dr Alwan's previous research includes a previous 1st Class Honours degree in Medical Genetics, an Academic Foundation Doctor post at St. John’s investigating the immune system in melanoma and he has served as an investigator in clinical trials of psoriasis, urticaria and alopecia areata.  Wisam’s has published in numerous high impact journals including Cell Host & Microbe, the British Journal of Dermatology and the British Medical Journal.  

He also has a keen interest in medical education, having completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  He is also a member of the British Association of Dermatologists, the Royal College of Physicians, the British Medical Association and the European Society of Dermatological Research.
