What is Skin Irritation After Weight Loss?

Following significant weight loss, itchy skin, rashes and chafing are common side effects due to the development of folds of loose skin, which can cause irritation.

Friction, heat and various other factors can all affect loose skin following weight loss, leading to uncomfortable skin irritation.

As well as physical discomfort, skin irritation and itchy skin after weight loss can have a dramatic effect on an individual’s confidence and quality of life:

  • Limiting mobility, including making exercise challenging
  • Hygiene challenges resulting from difficult-to-reach areas
  • Self-consciousness in revealing clothing

It is important to acknowledge that these effects can take away from the considerable achievement of losing a large amount of weight.

Depending on the severity of a patient’s concerns, there are several surgical and non-surgical treatment options that can effectively address chafing and skin irritation after weight loss.

Cadogan Clinic’s dedicated team of Consultant Body Surgeons and Dermatologists are experts in treating the side effects of loose skin after weight loss.

Which Areas of the Body Can Be Affected by Skin Irritation After Weight Loss?

Skin irritation after weight loss can affect many areas of the body, and individuals may be affected in different ways and to varying degrees of severity.

When large amounts of weight are lost from the abdomen, it is normal to develop a fold of loose skin that hangs down over the front of the body and, in severe cases, over the tops of the thighs. This fold of skin is known as a panniculus, or apron belly.

Many patients find that they develop itchy skin and chafing underneath the panniculus due to the mobility of the area.

Loose skin can develop around the breasts during weight loss, resulting in a sagging appearance.

This causes the natural crease under the breasts, known as the inframammary fold, to become exaggerated, resulting in friction and skin irritation.

The skin of the inner thighs is thinner and more elastic than in other areas of the body. This means it is particularly prone to loosening after weight loss, developing into excess skin.

Because the thighs naturally sit close together, any loose skin in this area is easily irritated by friction, which can lead to chafing and itching.

Like the inner thighs, the skin on the upper arms is very stretchy and thin. Loose skin around the upper arms is often referred to as bingo wings.

Close-fitting clothing and the arms moving close to the body can all lead to excess skin becoming irritated and itchy.

Dramatic weight loss can cause the buttocks to sag and the skin to become loose.

Repeated movement, including walking and exercise, can cause this excess skin to become irritated and uncomfortable.

What are the Symptoms of Skin Irritation After Weight Loss?

There are several signs and symptoms that are associated with skin irritation after weight loss.

  • Rashes, inflammation or irritation forming under folds of loose skin that are challenging or resistant to treatment
  • Rubbing or chafing in areas where skin is in contact with clothes or other areas of skin, such as the inner thighs
  • Changes in skin texture or pigmentation
  • Itching, discomfort or pain in the affected areas
  • Areas of loose skin trapping sweat or heat

From a medical perspective, if these symptoms are left unmanaged or untreated, they can lead to infections. Regardless, they can significantly affect overall comfort and quality of life.

What Causes Skin Irritation After Weight Loss?

Developing any skin rash after weight loss is typically associated with dramatic weight loss; however, it may occur with ongoing weight fluctuations or smaller amounts of weight loss as well.

Several factors can cause skin irritation after weight loss, but it is important to note that they are often interconnected.

Loose Skin After Weight Loss

Loose or excess skin is at the root of most skin irritation after weight loss. Following dramatic weight loss, many people find they are left with folds of loose skin in various areas of the body.

The most common areas affected by loose skin after weight loss are the:

Loose skin after weight loss occurs because, as the fat in the area diminishes, the skin isn’t able to retract to its original position, as it has become stretched when the fat initially accumulated.

There are two reasons why these areas are disproportionately affected by loose skin:

  • The abdomen, buttocks, and breasts are all areas which naturally accumulate fat, so it is normal for more fat proportionately to be lost from these areas, making loose skin more likely
  • The skin of the upper arms and inner thighs is especially thin and flexible, which means that it doesn’t retract as easily as other areas of the body. Even small amounts of weight loss in these areas can result in loose skin

Excess skin is linked to most cases of skin irritation after weight loss because:

  • Loose skin is typically more mobile than toned skin. This means that friction and rubbing can be exacerbated
  • In areas such as the abdomen, breasts and buttocks, loose skin forms folds that can trap moisture and heat. This can become a prime area for microorganisms to thrive

Chafing and Rubbing of Skin

Chafing is skin irritation caused by tiny tears forming in the skin’s natural protective barrier, resulting from ongoing friction or rubbing between areas of skin, clothing or other materials.

Also known as rubbing of skin, the signs and symptoms of chafing are:

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Soreness and burning
  • Raw patches of skin
  • Crepey skin texture

Chafed skin is most common in areas where moisture can easily build up, including in folds and areas of loose skin:

  • Between the inner thighs
  • Under the arms
  • Under the breasts
  • Under the fold of the abdomen

Although chafing is most common in warm weather and after exercise, for individuals who have experienced dramatic weight loss, it may be a more regular concern, requiring ongoing management.

Hygiene Challenges

Hygiene challenges can be a significant catalyst for skin irritation after weight loss; however, this issue often receives a lack of attention due to embarrassment and shame.

Folds of loose, excess skin can easily trap moisture and heat. Especially if these folds are very deep, maintaining hygiene can be challenging. If the trapped moisture and heat are left unmanaged (even unintentionally), microorganisms can breed very easily, leading to a rash in folds of skin.

A skin rash under the belly fold or under the breasts is the most common sign, as these folds are often the deepest. If left untreated and unmanaged, the proliferation of microorganisms and skin damage can lead to bacterial and fungal skin infections developing.

It is also important to remember that any skin rash after weight loss can be exacerbated by skin movement, leading to chafing and rubbing.

How to Treat Skin Irritation After Weight Loss?

Treatment of skin irritation after weight loss depends on the severity of the condition and the patient's individual needs. While some patients may find that non-surgical management is sufficient, others may require surgical intervention to effectively address their concerns.

The best way to determine the right treatment for your concerns is to speak with a specialist Consultant at our award-winning surgical centre of excellence, based in Chelsea, London.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Skin Irritation After Weight Loss

Non-surgical treatments for any skin rash after weight loss range from dermatological medications to lifestyle changes and management strategies.

Prescription Medication

There are several prescription medications which may be suitable for treating skin irritation after weight loss, both in the short and long-term:

Steroid Creams

Topical steroid creams are used to treat rashes and reduce inflammation. They work by preventing the release of inflammatory chemicals within the body and slowing down skin cell production.

Steroid creams are a highly effective treatment for acute rashes and skin irritation. However, they cannot be used long-term, so they must be paired with lifestyle changes to manage and prevent skin irritation from recurring.
Topical steroid creams are most appropriate for patients who are experiencing minor skin irritation after weight loss, which can be effectively managed through lifestyle changes.

Antibacterial and Antifungal Medications

For patients whose skin irritation has progressed to infection, a prescribed medication and treatment plan are often the most effective option.

A Dermatologist will prescribe an antibacterial medication for a bacterial infection or an antifungal medication for a fungal infection. They may request skin swab tests to identify the cause of the infection and determine the correct medication.

Medication to treat a skin infection may be either a topical cream or a course of tablets. Your Dermatologist will also discuss ongoing treatment and management of the skin irritation to prevent future infections.

Treatments to Control Sweating

In cases where trapped moisture causes skin irritation in folds of loose skin, a Dermatologist may recommend treatments to reduce sweating. There are typically three options:

  • Topical antiperspirants – These are applied directly to the skin in the areas where sweating is a concern to block the sweat ducts
  • Anticholinergic drugs – A course of tablets which block the nerve signals to the sweat glands
  • Neurotoxin injections – Injections every few months reduce the amount of sweat produced

Controlling the sweating is an effective long-term treatment for many patients, which helps to prevent skin irritation from developing.

Over-the-Counter Skin Treatments

Various over-the-counter skin treatments are suitable for patients who wish to treat and manage skin irritation in the long term.

Emollient Creams

Emollient creams are moisturisers that soften, smooth, and hydrate the skin by forming a protective barrier that locks in moisture.

In addition to preventing flare-ups of skin irritation with continued use, emollient creams can reduce discomfort and skin concerns caused by chafing or skin rubbing.

Emollient creams are a highly effective option for managing ongoing skin irritation, but may not be suitable for the most severe cases.

Anti-Chafing Treatments

Several over-the-counter options are available to manage and prevent chafing or skin rubbing.

Anti-chafing treatments are available in different forms, depending on personal preferences:

  • Balms or creams – Suitable for both preventing chafing and hydrating existing skin irritation
  • Jellies and gels – Create a smooth surface which prevents friction and skin rubbing
  • Powders – Absorb excess moisture to reduce friction

These treatments can be used daily to increase comfort and prevent chafing. They will often form part of a long-term treatment plan to manage skin irritation after weight loss.

Other Lifestyle Changes

In addition to prescription and over-the-counter medications and treatments, individuals may adopt lifestyle changes to manage and prevent skin irritation associated with loose skin after weight loss.

Clothing

Clothes are a key factor in preventing and managing chafing and skin irritation and chafing:

  • Anti-rub shorts – These are tight-fitting shorts which can be worn under other clothing such as skirts to prevent thigh chafing
  • Moisture-wicking fabrics – Materials such as polyester, nylon and spandex help moisture to evaporate quickly from the skin
  • Smooth seams – Avoid clothing with seams which sit in areas where the skin becomes irritated to minimise rub points
  • Proper fit – Fabric that is too loose can move and rub against the skin, while overly tight clothing can dig in and cause irritation. Ensuring clothing fits well, finding the right balance, and preventing rubbing and skin irritation

Effective Skin Care

It is essential to properly care for the skin to prevent and manage skin irritation after weight loss.

The two most important steps are:

  • Effective cleansing with a gentle cleanser, especially after exercise or in warm weather
  • Regularly drying the skin and keeping it dry prevents the build-up of moisture

In more severe cases of skin irritation after weight loss, effective skin care may be challenging, and further intervention may be required to effectively address the concerns.

Hydration

Although hydration is essential for overall health and well-being, it is also vital to manage skin irritation after weight loss.

High salt concentrations in sweat increase irritation when sweat dries on the skin. Drinking plenty of water dilutes the sweat, reducing the levels of salt, and minimising irritation when the sweat dries on the skin.

Surgical Treatments for Skin Irritation After Weight Loss

Although non-surgical treatments are highly effective in managing skin irritation after weight loss, they may not always be suitable for more severe cases, and the ongoing involvement may not be manageable for all patients.

In these cases, post-weight-loss surgical treatments may be the most effective option for reducing skin irritation, thereby improving comfort and quality of life.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, also known as a Tummy Tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes loose skin from the abdomen, resulting in a toned and smooth midriff.

Depending on the extent and location of the loose skin, there are different Abdominoplasty techniques which your surgeon may recommend:

  • Standard Abdominoplasty – A horizontal incision is made along the bottom of the abdomen to remove loose skin from the lower and mid-abdomen
  • Extended Abdominoplasty – The same incision is made along the bottom of the abdomen, as in a Standard Abdominoplasty, but it is extended to allow loose skin to be removed from the hips and lower back as well
  • Fleur-de-Lis Abdominoplasty – As well as a horizontal incision along the bottom of the abdomen, a vertical incision is made in the centre of the abdomen to remove loose skin from the upper and lower abdomen.

Abdominoplasty is often combined with other body contouring procedures, such as Liposuction, to enhance the final result. The procedure takes 3-4 hours to complete and is carried out under general anaesthetic.

Arm Lift

Arm Lift is a surgical procedure that removes loose skin from the upper arms, to address a concern often referred to as bingo wings.

An incision is made down the inner side of the upper arm, before excess skin and fat are removed. The remaining tissue is repositioned, and the incision is closed. The results are defined and balanced upper arms with no excess skin.

Arm Lift surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Breast Lift

Breast Lift, also known as Mastopexy, is a surgical procedure which involves removing excess skin from the breasts and repositioning them to achieve a lifted position on the chest.

An anchor-shaped incision is made in the fold beneath the breast, extending toward the nipple. Excess skin and tissue are removed before the breasts are repositioned and the incisions are closed.

Depending on the extent of the surgery, a Breast Lift takes around 2 hours to perform and is carried out under general anaesthetic.

Buttock Lift

A Buttock Lift is a surgical procedure performed under general anaesthetic, which removes loose skin and lifts the position of the buttocks.

There are two types of Buttock Lift surgery:

  • Upper Buttock Lift – This focuses on the lower back and upper part of the buttocks
  • Lower Buttock Lift – This targets the upper thighs and lower buttocks

The result is lifted and balanced buttocks. Patients who are concerned about a lack of volume in their buttocks may consider a Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, procedure.

Buttock Lift takes 3-4 hours to complete, depending on the extent of the surgery and the specific techniques involved.

Thigh Lift

Thigh Lift surgery addresses excess skin on the inner and outer thighs, resulting in a defined, smooth appearance of the upper legs.

A vertical incision is made down the inner thigh before excess skin is removed. The remaining tissue is then repositioned, and the incision is closed.

Removing loose skin from the inner thighs effectively and permanently reduces thigh chafing.

A Thigh Lift takes 3-4 hours to complete and is performed under general anaesthetic.

Words From Our Founder

Mr. Bryan Mayou

One of the most significant effects of loose skin after weight loss is skin irritation caused by either skin rubbing or moisture and heat trapped in the folds. In my 40-year career, I have seen the importance of treating and managing this skin irritation through both non-surgical and surgical routes to restore comfort and quality of life.
Mr. Bryan Mayou

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, weight loss can result in skin rashes. This is due to the development of loose skin, which causes skin to rub and traps moisture and heat in the folds.

A skin rash under belly fold, under the breast fold, under the arms, or in between the thighs are the most common areas. A weight loss rash can be treated either surgically or non-surgically depending on the needs of the patient.

Treating a rash in folds of skin after weight loss can be challenging as moisture and heat may continue to cause the rash to recur.

Often, the best way to ensure any rash in folds of skin is effectively treated in the long-term is through surgery to remove the excess skin, allowing air to flow freely in the area.

There are also several prescription and over-the-counter options available to treat and manage a rash in folds of skin or a rash from weight loss.

Chafed skin is skin irritation caused by recurrent friction between areas of skin and clothing, often exacerbated by warm weather or moisture from sweating.

It appears as red, inflamed, raw patches of skin and is most common on the inner thighs, under the arms, breasts, and abdomen, where loose skin often develops after weight loss.

Loose skin chafing can be highly uncomfortable and may reduce confidence by making individuals self-conscious.

There are several ways to prevent and manage chafing skin after weight loss:

  • Properly fitting clothing to prevent rubbing and irritation
  • Anti chafing products, including balms and powders to stop the skin from rubbing and reduce moisture
  • Anti chafing shorts, which can be worn under other clothing to protect the skin and prevent thigh chafing
