What is a Calf Augmentation?

Calf Augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves increasing the size or changing the shape of the lower legs by either inserting silicone calf implants, or using fat transfer. This enhances calf definition and gives a balanced and proportionate appearance to the legs.

Calf Augmentation is popular with both men and women, although their desired outcomes often differ. Male patients are more likely to wish to achieve a more muscular appearance in their calves, whereas women may look for a softer result that still enhances definition.

Calf Augmentation is often performed as a cosmetic procedure but can also address congenital concerns or concerns caused by disease or injury. For patients with one calf larger than the other, calf implants can restore symmetric proportions to the legs.

If calf implants are used, the procedure involves your surgeon making an incision vertically down the calf. The calf implant is inserted into the leg, and the incision is closed. In cases involving fat transfer, Liposuction is used to remove unwanted fat from various areas of the body. This can be any area where there are unwanted fat deposits. The thighs are a popular area to extract fat prior to a Calf Augmentation, as this enhances the final result, contouring the overall leg. Similarly, fat can be extracted from around the calves and ankles or the knees. The fat is then processed to remove impurities before it is injected into the calves. Fat Transfer is suited to patients looking for a highly bespoke result, as the fat can be injected into specific areas or to create a particular shape, which isn’t possible with calf implants.

Cadogan Clinic has brought together a team of expert consultant surgeons who offer Calf Augmentation to address your concerns and achieve your cosmetic goals. Contact our dedicated team of surgical patient advisors for more information on Calf Augmentation and to book your initial consultation.

Calf Implants Before and After

During your initial consultation, your surgeon will show you a range of Calf Augmentation before and after images. This will show you the possible results and demonstrate your surgeon's experience and skill. Your surgeon will specifically show you Calf Implants before and after photos of their previous patients who had similar concerns and desired results to your own. This will give you the best comparison to your own circumstances and enable you to see the outcomes you are likely to achieve.

Calf Augmentation with Fat Transfer

Fat Transfer to the Calves involves extracting fat from various areas of the body, processing it to remove impurities and then injecting it into the calves. Depending on the number of areas of Liposuction and the amount of fat injected into the calves, it can be performed under general anaesthetic or sedation.

As well as enhancing the contours of the lower legs, Calf Augmentation with Fat Transfer is beneficial as excess fat is removed from unwanted areas, further enhancing the final result. Some patients also prefer fat grafting as it involves using their own natural tissue instead of a foreign implant. Fat Transfer is also less invasive than implants, with minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time. However, Calf Augmentation with Fat Transfer produces a less dramatic result than implants, so may not be suited to patients looking for a significant change to their calves.

Calf Augmentation with Implants

Calf Augmentation with implants in the UK typically involves a choice between two types of silicone implants. The first type are ready-made and are available various shapes and sizes. The second type of implants are custom-made, based on the patient's anatomy and specific requirements. Cutom-made implants may be more suited to patients who are considering Calf Augmentation due to an injury or disease and have specific anatomical considerations.

Calf implants are suited to patients who wish to achieve a more dramatic result, or who do not have enough excess fat to extract for fat grafting. Depending on the desired outcomes, a suitable calf implant can be inserted to increase the size of the calf, or a thinner implant can be used to enhance the contours and provide a softer result.

Why Do People Have Calf Augmentation?

Calf Augmentation is primarily performed as a cosmetic procedure to address concerns about the size of the calves. Some patients feel their calves are too small in comparison to the rest of their leg, making them look out of proportion. This may impact confidence or increase self-consciousness and may lead some people to avoid wearing clothing such as shorts or fitted trousers, or avoid activities such as exercise or swimming. Calf Augmentation, either with calf implants or fat transfer, increases the size of the calves and brings them into proportion with the rest of the leg. For many patients, this results in increased confidence and quality of life

For some patients, the size or shape of their calves has been affected by an injury or disease. This may also lead to a loss of confidence or feeling unable to participate in particular activities. Depending on the concerns, a calf implant can be used, but for many patients, fat transfer is highly effective in this situation as the shape and size are almost infinitely adjustable.

Who is Suitable for Calf Augmentation?

At Cadogan Clinic, our consultant surgeons will assess your suitability for Calf Augmentation in a bespoke one-to-one consultation lasting between 30 and 60 minutes at our award-winning clinic located in Chelsea, London.

Your surgeon will discuss your concerns and desired outcomes and take your medical history. They will then examine your calves to establish the best method of Calf Augmentation for you and whether a calf implant or fat transfer would be more suitable. They will also assess your general physical and mental health to ensure you are fit and well for a general anaesthetic procedure. This will include your height, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate.

Calf Augmentation Surgeons

We have invited a selection of the country's very best consultants to join us at the Cadogan Clinic so that you can be sure that whatever the nature of your treatment, you will be seeing one of the top practitioners in the country.

What to Expect

What can you expect having a Calf Augmentation at Cadogan Clinic.

When you first contact Cadogan Clinic about Calf Augmentation, you will speak with one of our specialist surgical advisors. They will discuss the procedure, answer any questions, and book your initial consultation. You will have the same advisor throughout your journey with Cadogan Clinic, and they will be on hand to provide guidance at every stage.

You will have a one-to-one consultation with one of our expert surgeons to discuss calf implants, and to assess whether you are suitable for the procedure. This consultation usually lasts 30-60 minutes and takes place at our clinic in Chelsea, London.

We recommend preparing any questions in advance to bring to your consultation. This ensures you can find all the answers you need and make the most of your time with your surgeon. Your surgeon will also ask you questions to understand a little bit more about your medical history and lifestyle to ensure calf implants are the right fit for you.
Your surgeon will perform a general health and wellness check, including mental wellbeing checks, take your measurements, and take 'before' photos for your medical records.

They will then send your proposed surgical plan through to your patient advisor. If you are suitable for a Calf Augmentation, your advisor will explain the plan, pricing, finance options and offer available surgery dates. You will then be given a mandatory 2-week cooling-off period to allow you to consider whether you wish to proceed with the surgery. If you have any further questions for your consultant, your patient advisor can book a second consultation for you.

If, after the cooling-off period, you wish to go ahead with your Calf Augmentation, your next visit to the clinic will be on the day of your procedure. In the run-up to your surgery, you will be asked to make the following changes and preparations, such as:

  • You must complete all pre-operative paperwork to allow your surgeon, anaesthetist, and nurses to review your suitability for general anaesthetic surgery, which includes reviewing your medical and psychological information. This will then allow your team to make more personalised decisions on any changes you need to make before your surgery.
  • You will be asked to stop smoking and/or vaping for 6 weeks before your calf implant surgery, and for a little while after. This ensures your body is able to recover and heal properly.
  • You will also be asked to cut down on or stop drinking alcohol. Excessive alcohol consumption can also slow your recovery and healing.
  • Avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications for 7 days before your Calf Augmentation surgery. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain herbal supplements, as these can increase the risk of bleeding which may lengthen your recovery.
  • You will need to organise a chaperone to collect you after your calf implant surgery to ensure you get home safely. This should be a family member, significant other, or trusted friend who can either drive you home or accompany you in a taxi and stay overnight with you.
  • In the 6 hours before you arrive at Cadogan Clinic for your procedure, you cannot eat any solid food or consume any juice or milk (including in tea or coffee). You can have sips of clear drinks (water, black coffee, or black tea) up to 2 hours before you arrive, after which you must be nil by mouth.

You will be asked to arrive an hour before your surgery is due to begin on your procedure day. One of our specialist nurses will prep you for surgery by asking you to wear a surgical gown and compression stockings. Your surgeon and anaesthetist will come and speak to you to answer any final questions before your procedure.

After this, you will be taken into one of our in-house operating theatres and the general anaesthetic will be administered. Every procedure performed under general anaesthetic at Cadogan Clinic uses TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia). This minimises post-operative sickness and nausea, allowing for faster initial recovery when you wake up post-surgery.

Your surgeon will then perform your Calf Augmentation, typically taking around 2 hours. After the procedure, you will be taken to our recovery ward, where you will wake up from the anaesthetic, and a nurse will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure and temperature. Once you are awake and comfortable, you will be transferred into the care of our ambulatory ward, where you will have something to eat and drink, and a nurse will talk you through any medications you need to take once you are discharged. When you are ready and comfortable with your aftercare guidance, we will ask your chaperone to come and collect you to continue your recovery journey at home.

The first few days following calf implant surgery may be slightly uncomfortable as you may experience some pain around your calves. This could include swelling and bruising, which is normal. Your legs may feel slightly stiff for the first week, but your walking will become more normal in the second and third weeks of recovery. Your surgical team will have prescribed any pain management medications so you can control this at home. You may have been provided with post-operative garments to protect and support your calves and it is important to wear these as directed by your surgeon.

One week after your surgery, you will have an in-person appointment with our specialist surgical nurses so they can assess your incisions and make sure you are healing well. They will provide any advice you need on dressings and will be able to answer any questions you may have about your Calf Augmentation recovery.

Six weeks after your Calf Augmentation, you will meet with your surgeon so they can discuss your results and answer any questions about your ongoing recovery from that point. After six weeks, your treatment plan will conclude, though if you have any questions or concerns, you can still contact the team and speak with one of our specialist nurses.

Words From Our Founder

Mr. Bryan Mayou

Calf Augmentation is an effective and transformational procedure which enhances the size and contours of the lower legs, creating a proportionate and balanced appearance. Regardless of the cause of calf concerns, either calf implants or fat transfer, can dramatically increase confidence and quality of life for many patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike some other body implants, calf implants do not expire and can be left in the body for as long as you wish, as long as they are not causing problems. Some patients keep their calf implants for up to 20 years. They can be replaced if a patient decides they wish to change the size or shape of the implants or in rare instances, if an issue does occur.

Calf Augmentation with fat cost will vary depending on the number of areas of Liposuction that are being carried out, and the amount of fat being injected into the calves. Following your initial consultation, your patient advisor will be able to advise on the cost based on your surgeon’s proposed treatment plan.

Calf implants UK cost may be different to Calf Augmentation with fat cost as the calf implants will influence the final quotation you are given.

When carried out by a qualified and experienced surgeon, Calf Augmentation with implants is entirely safe and can be a highly beneficial procedure.

We recommend having calf implants London surgery, to prevent the issues that can arise through having Calf Augmentation abroad. Cadogan Clinic’s Calf Augmentation UK surgeons are experts in their fields, and prioritise patient safety and surgical outcomes for all procedures.

Our surgeons do not recommend non-surgical Calf Augmentation. Calf Augmentation without surgery typically involves a dense Dermal Filler being injected into the area. This can come with the risk of filler being injected into a blood vessel, which can lead to a dangerous blockage, known as an embolism.

The Risks of a Calf Augmentation

All cosmetic procedures carry a risk of certain complications, and it is important that you discuss this with your surgeon. Your surgeon will assess your personal risk and may ask you to prepare in a certain way to ensure the best results possible.

The complications your surgeon will make you aware of are:

  • Hematoma - This is the build-up of blood beneath the skin and will require treatment from your surgeon
  • Poor wound healing - Healing complications or infection can affect the incision sites
  • Asymmetry - Occasionally, one calf may appear a different size or shape to the other. This may be a temporary part of the healing process or may be longer-term
  • Seroma - This is the formation of a lump under the skin caused by build up of fluid around the incision sites. This will require treatment from your surgeon.
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Allergic reaction to general anaesthetic
  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a vein)

Our award-winning team have been Calf Augmentation London providers for many years, and have performed countless successful procedures. We always put the safety of our patients first, and will only accept suitable cases who meet our suitability criteria. As one of the UK's and the world's leading surgical clinics, we take our responsibility to our patients very seriously.
