What is Laser Liposuction?

Laser Liposuction, also known as Smart Lipo or shortened to laser lipo, is an innovative Liposuction technique which removes stubborn fat from areas in your body that are not responding to diet and exercise alone.

Lasers are used to break down the fat cells within your body, before the fat is removed through a cannula, meaning the fat drains from the body more easily. Laser lipo also encourages the production of collagen, which helps to tighten and smooth the skin, following the procedure.

This procedure is not a weight loss treatment. If you are carrying excess weight, this may not be a suitable treatment for you. The treatment is meant to remove small areas of excess fat that are stubborn or resistant to lifestyle changes and exercise. London Laser Liposuction patients should be healthy with a stable weight.

Smart Lipo is performed under general anaesthetic and procedures usually take 1-2 hours depending on the number of areas being treated.

Which areas can be treated with Laser Liposuction?

As with traditional Liposuction, Laser Liposuction can be used to remove stubborn fat in areas all over the body. Your surgeon may be able to treat multiple areas in one procedure, or you may need follow up treatments in order to achieve your desired results:

Laser Liposuction removes fatty deposits from the face as well as tightening areas of skin which have dropped or become looser with age.

Neck - Using Laser Liposuction on the neck, defines the contours and tightens the skin, resulting in a longer, more slender appearance.

Cheeks - Targeting overly full cheeks and restoring a more defined, youthful profile.

Chin - Removes a double chin and tightens the skin around the jawline. This is often combined with laser liposuction on the neck for a more dramatic effect.

Laser Liposuction is a popular method of removing stubborn fat from various areas of the body:

Back - Targets problem areas such as the lower back and stubborn fat which are causing ‘bra rolls’.

Abdomen - Laser Liposuction is a popular method of removing stubborn and obvious belly fat in both the upper and lower abdomen.

Mons pubis - Removes the stubborn mound of fatty tissue that sits over the pelvic bone. This is a common complaint in men and women.

Buttocks - Improves the shape of the buttocks as well as removing the rolls of fat under the buttocks, known as banana rolls.

Upper arms - Excess fat in the upper arms, often referred to as ‘bingo wings’, can be successfully treated with laser liposuction, which can also help to tighten the skin.

Laser Liposuction can be used to reduce the size of the breasts, whilst also tightening the skin, to prevent sagging.

Excess fat around the hips and abdomen can lead to ‘love handles’, which hang outwards from the hips - making clothes appear unflattering. Laser Liposuction eliminates fat from this problem area.

Laser Liposuction will also result in thinner, contoured thighs, and can be used to remove excess fat around the knees.

Why do people have Laser Liposuction?

Why do people have it & Who is suittable

Stubborn areas of fat can make people feel self-conscious and make wearing certain clothes or undertaking certain activities uncomfortable. Liposuction is a safe and effective procedure for removing this fat, resulting in a smooth and contoured figure. There are many reasons why patients may opt for Laser Liposuction over traditional Liposuction, including potentially having a faster recovery time. Your consultant will be able to advise which is the best Liposuction technique for you in your consultation. Despite the treatment differentiation from its traditional counterpart, laser liposuction before and after cases can be truly lifechanging.

Who is suitable for non-surgical liposuction?

Your specialist consultant surgeon will be able to assess whether you are suitable for our London Laser Liposuction procedure in your one-to-one consultation.

They will examine the areas you are hoping to have treated with Laser Liposuction to make sure it is the right treatment for you. They will also discuss your expectations of surgery and ensure you understand the results that are possible for you. You will also need to undergo a general medical assessment to confirm you are safe, fit and well for a general anaesthetic procedure. You must be over 18 to have Laser Liposuction.

The Patient Journey

Frequently Asked Questions

First, the treated area is marked up and a small incision (1-2 mm) is made with a micro-scalpel and the local anaesthetic is injected.

The optical fibre of the laser is inserted with its progress through the skin tissue clearly observed from the surface by the light on the laser.

Treatment involves tracing the marked-up lines on the surface of the skin with the laser underneath, in a regular, metronomic lengthways movement. The laser breaks down the fatty tissue via thermal energy and mechanical movement and transforms the fat cells into an oily emulsion that can be suctioned out easily.

There are no stitches, only very small incision sites that heal quickly in a few days. The treatment takes about 1-2 hours depending on the number of treated areas. Given the minimal trauma involved in the treatment, recovery is much quicker than with traditional alternatives, and you can be back to daily life the very next day.

The length of Laser liposuction treatment depends on the number of areas being targeted. Surgery time can range from 1 hour to 3 hours.

Most patients can see instant results following the SmartLipo procedure, however, it is important to remember that there will be some swelling after surgery. Once this subsides your full results will be visible – this should take between one to two months maximum.

Laser liposuction results can be seen a week after the procedure, with the full results visible four to six months post-surgery.

The results of laser lipo are permanent, as the treatment ‘deactivates’ the fat cells, leaving them unable to store fat anymore. You will be able to sustain the results providing a healthy diet, lifestyle and weight are maintained following surgery. Further laser liposuction can be carried out on problem areas if required.

Downtime is very limited. The patient is free to leave the Clinic after several hours, and should immediately resume reasonable mobility. Exercise should be limited for a maximum of two weeks, with a return to work possible the very next day.

Smart lipo uses a laser to melt down the fat, making it easier to remove from the body. Vaser lipo uses ultrasound to break down the fat cells from the surrounding tissue.

Vaser liposuction claims to be quicker, more effective and less painful than other techniques. However, Vaser also has the potential for far more complications. This technique often produces lumpy results and even occasional burns. Often this means that further treatment is needed to correct the damage. We do not recommend Vaser and do not offer this type of liposuction at the Cadogan Clinic.

What are the risks?

Your surgeon will discuss any potential risks and complications associated with Smart Lipo, during your consultation. It is important to understand how these complications may affect your surgery and the steps you need to take in order to reduce your personal risk.

  • Hematoma - This is the build-up of blood beneath the skin and will require treatment from your surgeon
  • Poor wound healing - Healing complications or infection can affect the incision sites
  • Asymmetry - Occasionally, the treated areas may appear uneven
  • Seroma - This is the formation of a lump under the skin caused by build up of fluid around the incision sites. This will require treatment from your surgeon.
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Allergic reaction to general anaesthetic
  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a vein)

In the event of you requiring a secondary surgery due to a complication, it is important to remember that this does not reflect your surgeon's qualifications or skill. Our specialist consultant surgeons have performed laser lipo in London numerous times.
