A "mummy makeover" is a comprehensive surgical approach that combines various procedures to rejuvenate the body, restoring it to its pre-pregnancy appearance.
This transformative procedure often encompasses a breast augmentation and breast lift, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and liposuction. These surgeries can be harmoniously integrated into a single surgical session for convenience and optimal results.
The main goal of a mummy makeover is to restore a woman's body shape and appearance following pregnancy. Pregnancy often leads to noticeable physical changes, and many women desire a return to their pre-pregnancy figure.
This procedure comprehensively addresses various areas, including the breasts, abdomen, waist, thighs, genital area, and buttocks. This comprehensive approach can typically be completed in a single surgery, streamlining the recovery process.
Breast augmentation and lift procedures are aimed at achieving firmer, more shapely breasts. These surgeries can be performed together or in stages, with the breast lift often preceding the augmentation to ensure the best possible outcome.
For those women seeking abdominal rejuvenation through a tummy tuck, excess skin and fat below the belly button are removed and skillfully repositioned, resulting in a tighter and more toned abdomen. The incisions are strategically concealed below the waistline, minimising visible scarring. Often, this procedure is complemented by liposuction, further enhancing body contours, with typical areas for the liposuction including the waist, hips, and thighs.
When planning a mummy makeover, several factors are carefully considered:
By addressing these considerations in consultation with a skilled surgeon, women can embark on their journey toward restoring their pre-pregnancy body and confidence through a customised mummy makeover.

The main motivation for women seeking a mummy makeover procedure is to reclaim a more aesthetically pleasing body shape and appearance, reminiscent of the body one enjoyed before pregnancy and childbirth.
This comprehensive procedure is designed to reverse unwanted changes that often occur during and after pregnancy, encompassing issues such as unmovable "baby weight," changes in breast size and shape, excess tummy skin, and undesired changes in genital shape and function.
Mothers who choose to undergo these transformative procedures typically report a notable boost in self-confidence and an enhanced sense of psychological well-being.
Some of the typical improvements expected from mummy makeover surgery are as follows:
Ultimately, a mummy makeover aims to enhance overall body contour and shape, leading to increased satisfaction with one's physical appearance.
At the Cadogan Clinic we've seen numbers double since 2019 for Mummy Makeovers. The most popular combination in 2023 was Breast Surgery + Brazilian Tummy Tuck. |

There are a number of areas which are typically treated as part of a mummy makeover
Breasts
Pregnancy often leads to increased breast fullness and weight, stretching the ligaments and causing sagging. This effect can worsen with subsequent pregnancies and breastfeeding, leaving breasts appearing deflated after nursing. A mummy makeover typically incorporates either a breast augmentation procedure to restore volume or a breast uplift (mastopexy) to rejuvenate and uplift the breasts, giving them a perkier appearance.
Abdomen
Pregnancy stretches the skin of the abdomen, often leaving behind loose, sagging skin and stretch marks after childbirth. In cases of Caesarean section, a noticeable scar may also be present. Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, plays a crucial role in removing excess skin and redefining the abdominal area. While it doesn't address problem fat, it can be combined with liposuction for comprehensive contouring. Additionally, a tummy tuck can correct diastasis recti, a condition characterised by the separation of abdominal muscles, often affecting a significant number of post-pregnancy women.
Vagina and labia
Vaginal birth can sometimes result in issues such as diminished tone and/or sensation, and even urinary incontinence. Vaginoplasty is a procedure that strengthens vaginal muscles weakened by pregnancy and childbirth, restoring tone and control as well as addressing stress incontinence. Vaginal rejuvenation treatments, which may encompass procedures like vaginal tightening, perineal surgery, labiaplasty, or perineum and pelvic floor tightening, can be tailored to address individual needs and concerns.
Thighs
Pregnancy regularly leads to weight gain, especially on the thighs, where the fat can be particularly stubborn. Liposuction can effectively remove this excess fat and sculpt the thigh area. Conversely, substantial post-pregnancy weight loss can result in excess, loose skin, which a thigh lift procedure can address by removing excess tissue, creating a firmer contour.
Buttocks
Pregnancy triggers the release of relaxin, which relaxes muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the pelvic region in preparation for childbirth. Unfortunately, this can also cause stretching of the buttock muscles, negatively impacting their appearance. Coupled with natural weight fluctuations during pregnancy, this can lead to changes in buttock shape and volume. A buttock lift is a surgical solution to lift and reshape the buttocks, enhancing contours and achieving a shapelier appearance. Alternatively, if volume loss is a concern, a Brazilian Butt Lift may be recommended. This procedure involves transferring fat from another body area, such as the thighs or hips, to the buttocks, providing both lift and enhanced volume.
We have invited a selection of the country's very best consultants to join us at the Cadogan Clinic so that you can be sure that whatever the nature of your treatment, you will be seeing one of the top practitioners in the country.
Below you will find some key information to help you prepare for surgery and make necessary arrangements to ensure you have the support you need and that everything runs smoothly on the day.
01.The consultation
Your journey with the Cadogan Clinic begins with up to two consultations conducted by one of our esteemed specialist surgeons at our renowned Chelsea premises. These consultations typically last between 30 and 60 minutes.
During these consultations, your surgeon will engage in a comprehensive discussion about your expectations for your mummy makeover. They will provide insights into the procedure itself, including its impact and the expected recovery process. Open and honest communication about your desired surgical outcomes is crucial for achieving the best results, so feel free to ask any questions you may have. It might be helpful to jot down your queries before the consultation.
Your surgeon will also take key measurements and capture standard clinical photographs which can also be used for your mummy makeover before and after case photos. They will look into your medical history and perform a thorough physical examination to ensure your suitability for the procedure.
If your surgeon determines that you are a suitable candidate for the surgery, you will then have a two-week "cooling off" period to reflect on your decision before proceeding.
02.Leading up to procedure
If you decide to move forward with the surgery after the cooling off period, you'll return to the clinic on the day of the procedure.
To prepare effectively, please consider the following steps:
In the six hours before surgery, abstain from food and most drinks, except for small sips of clear fluids, such as still water, black coffee, and black tea, which are allowed up to two hours before your admission to the clinic.
03.On the day
On the day of your procedure, please arrive at the clinic an hour before the scheduled surgery start time. A nurse will record vital signs and conduct relevant tests. You will also meet with your anaesthetist and surgeon for final preparations. At the Cadogan Clinic, we use Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) to minimise post-surgery sickness and expedite recovery.
The procedure typically spans four to six hours, with the surgeon often starting with the breast area and then addressing the abdominal and genital areas to reduce infection risks. In most cases, all desired procedures are completed during a single surgery, although staged procedures are also an option.
Thanks to the expertise of our surgeons and anaesthetists, as well as the anaesthesia method used, patients can return home on the same day as their London mummy makeover procedure, experiencing minimal side effects.
04.Treatment recovery
Following your mummy makeover, you will recover in our ambulatory recovery rooms. Any initial drowsiness typically dissipates within a few hours. Once you can eat and drink, and our specialist nursing team is satisfied with your initial recovery, you will be permitted to leave the clinic in the company of a friend or family member.
Some pain or discomfort may be experienced following surgery, but over-the-counter pain relievers can effectively manage it. Recovery duration varies based on the procedures undergone, generally requiring at least three weeks off work. Full recovery can take between six and 12 weeks, contingent on the extent of the surgery. Our 24/7 on-call service is available to assist with any questions or concerns during this period.
You will meet with our nursing team one week after surgery for incision site checks. We also recommend consultation with one of our aestheticians to discuss ongoing treatments that support the healing process if necessary.
A final check-up will be scheduled six weeks after your mummy makeover surgery to assess your progress and ensure your complete satisfaction with the results.
The Patient Journey. A breakdown of what you can expect on your journey with us
We are deeply invested in ensuring that every step of your surgical journey with us is as informative and reassuring to you as it can be. This article outlines what you can expect at each stage of the journey
The Patient JourneyShould the mummy makeover be completed in phases?
The mummy makeover is typically performed as one single procedure. Part of the reason for this is that some of the treatments are naturally carried out in tandem.
For example, the Brazilian tummy tuck is a safe and improved surgical technique that combines liposuction to the upper abdomen and flanks with tissue removal and repair of tummy muscles. This modified technique has less pain, negates the need for drains and creates a better-sculpted shape.
Although the mummy makeover is performed as a day surgery, meaning you will not need to stay overnight, these are all invasive procedures and recovery takes time. Depending on which procedures you opt for, you can expect to be in recovery for between six and 12 weeks. During this time you will have to restrict certain activities, such as going to the gym and refrain from sexual relations. This is particularly important if you have undergone a procedure such as vaginal rejuvenation, which involves tightening the vagina, reducing the size of the labia and perineum and pelvic floor repair.
Some surgery, particularly surgery involving the intimate area, will leave you bed-bound for a couple of days. You will need someone to look after you and help around the house during this period. If the treatments are split over several procedures, then this means the clock resets on the recovery period and you will need more downtime, including taking extra time off work.
Having separate procedures also means multiple trips to the clinic and more anaesthesia, which comes with its own risks and potential for complications.
By having all your mummy makeover treatments in one convenient procedure, you will see a more dramatic result immediately, rather than drawing it out over a longer period of several months, or even years.
Having all the procedures at once may also cost less than having your surgery in phases. Please get in touch with our team who will be able to provide you with a quote.
How much does a mummy makeover cost?
The cost of a mummy makeover varies based on the selected treatments, how many treatments you are having, and the surgical techniques employed (such as various tummy tuck methods). Often, having all procedures performed simultaneously proves more cost-effective than staggered surgeries over an extended period. Your consultant can provide further guidance on this aspect.
The cost of mummy makeover at the Cadogan Clinic includes:
We also offer mummy makeover financing options through various high street providers. Feel free to speak with one of our patient advisors, who can guide you to a trusted finance provider accepted by the clinic.
What results can I expect from the mummy makeover?
Expectations for surgery outcomes often include:
The final results of a mummy makeover typically become noticeable around six weeks after treatment. However, continued enhancements may be observed over the subsequent 12 to 18 months. Your surgeon will provide specific guidance during your consultation once the precise combination of procedures is determined.
To ensure optimal results, it is crucial to follow all post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon. Neglecting these instructions may extend your recovery time and impact the outcome, including the visibility of scars.
Who is a good candidate for the mummy makeover?
Cadogan Clinic considers individuals suitable candidates for mummy makeover surgery if they meet the following criteria:
If you plan to have more children, it is advisable to wait until you have completed your family before considering a mummy makeover. The surgery cannot prevent the effects of future pregnancies, and subsequent pregnancies may necessitate additional surgery at a later date.
Are the results of a mummy makeover permanent?
While the results of a mummy makeover are long-lasting, they are not entirely permanent. The body continues to change with age, and skin elasticity naturally decreases over time.
You can extend the longevity of your mummy makeover results by adopting a healthy lifestyle, which includes proper nutrition, exercise, and abstaining from smoking. Smoking accelerates the ageing process and can lead to sagging skin while hindering the healing process.
In the future, you might consider additional treatments like liposuction or a breast lift to maintain your rejuvenated body. It is not recommended to undergo a mummy makeover if you plan to get pregnant again, as this would significantly impact the results. Similarly, significant post-surgery weight gain or loss should be avoided, as it can result in excess lax skin that requires further treatment.
How soon will I recover from a mummy makeover?
Recovery times for mummy makeover procedures vary depending on the specific treatments and the nature of your job. Sedentary roles often allow for quicker returns compared to physically demanding occupations.
Following your surgery, you can gradually reintroduce low-impact activities like walking and cycling before resuming more strenuous activities, including heavy lifting and intense aerobic exercises.
Post-surgery pain may persist for one to two weeks, and abdominal tightness may be felt for several weeks. A post-surgical garment will be provided to offer support and assist with bruising and swelling. This should be worn continuously for four to six weeks. Vigorous exercise should be avoided for six to 12 weeks.
Should you choose to split your mummy makeover surgery into multiple procedures, expect a more extended overall recovery period.
You will have access to free aftercare provided by the Cadogan Clinic's dedicated nursing team for 24 months after the procedure for any queries or questions you may have.
How soon after having children can I have a mummy makeover?
We recommend waiting at least six months before undergoing a mummy makeover to allow the abdominal tissue to heal adequately, particularly if a tummy tuck is involved or you are specifically targetting conditions such as a mummy tummy or C Section Pouch. The same is true for procedures that are targetting post pregnancy vaginal rejuvenation or breast surgery after breastfeeding.
Mummy makeover surgery is invasive and involves an extended recovery period, often lasting up to 12 weeks. If you have young children, you will likely require constant care during your recovery, with some bed rest necessary. It's crucial to avoid lifting small children in the aftermath of surgery. These factors should be taken into account when considering mummy makeover surgery.
Can I breastfeed after having a mummy makeover?
If you have had a breast lift as part of your mummy makeover, you should still be able to breastfeed, as this procedure typically does not interfere with milk supply. However, finding a comfortable and safe breastfeeding position during your recovery may be challenging.
Breastfeeding with breast implants is also possible, depending on the size and placement of the implants. Incisions made under the fold of the breast or through the armpit generally do not prevent breastfeeding. Your surgeon can provide more specific guidance during your initial consultation at the Cadogan Clinic.
Mr. Bryan Mayou
Pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding all combine to exert a huge amount of stress on the female body, and often several times over in relatively quick succession. The impact of this on both physical and emotional wellbeing can be significant, and what I love about this group of procedures is their ability to so quickly and comprehensively restore this sense of wellbeing in this most deserving of patient demographics. It is precisely the combination effect of several simultaneous procedures that deliver such transformative and impactful improvements all at once, which makes this such a popular and rewarding procedure.Mr. Bryan Mayou

Get in TouchPregnancy and childbirth are transformative experiences, often having a huge impact on a woman's body. While some women fully embrace these changes, one may wish to regain their youthful, pre-pregnancy body. Mummy makeover surgery offers a path to restore a woman's pre-baby body. After the journey of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, many women are left with lingering challenges, including excess skin, weakened abdominal muscles, postpartum weight, sagging or deflated breasts, and vaginal changes affecting tone and sensation. Mummy makeover surgery effectively addresses these issues.
A mummy makeover is a personalised treatment plan tailored to the unique needs of each patient. It typically encompasses a combination of procedures targeting various areas, including the breasts, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, and vagina. The most common procedure combinations include abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast surgery, and liposuction, all of which can be seamlessly integrated into a single treatment.
Mothers who embark on this transformative journey often report a remarkable boost in self-confidence and an enhanced sense of psychological well-being.
While healthy eating and exercise can help restore some semblance of a pre-baby body, there are situations where these efforts fall short. For instance, only surgical abdominoplasty can effectively address diastasis recti, a common separation of the abdominal muscles that often occurs during pregnancy. Similarly, in cases of stress incontinence, pelvic floor exercises may have limited effectiveness, and vaginal rejuvenation surgery can be a valuable solution.
We understand that time is a precious commodity for mothers, making it challenging to allocate sufficient time for exercise and addressing stubborn "baby weight." Liposuction, a surgical procedure that removes fat cells from various body areas, including the thighs and abdomen, offers an effective and efficient solution for eliminating excess fat and restoring lost contours and definition.
The breasts are often particularly affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding. While breasts enlarge during pregnancy and breastfeeding, they can subsequently experience sagging and develop stretch marks, leaving them looking deflated. Consequently, breast augmentation (a breast enhancement) or a breast uplift (mastopexy) are frequently sought after as part of mummy makeover surgery.
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is another integral component of the mummy makeover. This procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat below the navel, which is then skillfully redraped to create a firmer abdominal appearance. Simultaneously, the underlying muscles are repositioned to enhance contour and aesthetics. The incision is expertly concealed below the waistline. Notably, the Cadogan Clinic is the sole cosmetic centre of excellence in the UK offering the innovative Brazilian Abdominoplasty technique as part of the mummy makeover.
In essence, a mummy makeover is a highly customizable journey, uniquely crafted to fulfil your individual needs and desires, following a thorough consultation with one of our expert surgeons.
The Cadogan Clinic stands as one of London's premier providers of mummy makeovers. Our consultants adopt a holistic approach, thoroughly assessing each patient's body shape, proportions, goals, and expectations. By considering these factors, our practitioners collaborate closely with the patient, and if necessary, other consultants, to meticulously plan the most appropriate course of treatment, delivering optimal, natural, and harmonious results.
One of the most compelling benefits of a mummy makeover is the opportunity for a woman to reclaim her pre-pregnancy body. This encompassing transformation includes the restoration of fuller, perkier breasts, a firmer, flatter stomach, and the elimination of stubborn excess fat from areas such as the thighs, hips, and waist.
Mummy makeover surgery effectively reduces stretch marks gained during pregnancy, particularly around the breasts and lower abdomen. It can even enhance the appearance of a C-section scar when scar revision is part of the procedure.
Breast lifts play a pivotal role in elevating and rejuvenating the overall appearance of the breasts, reviving a youthful cleavage. Some women opt for breast augmentation to enhance their bust size, providing an additional boost of confidence for those who were dissatisfied with their breast size before pregnancy.
Furthermore, a mummy makeover extends its transformative touch to vaginal rejuvenation, addressing issues like stress incontinence and the physical trauma inflicted by childbirth, such as perineal damage or vaginal prolapse, characterised by a bulging or heaviness in the vaginal or lower abdominal area.
The hormonal changes during pregnancy can adversely affect the skin, but mummy makeover surgery offers a remedy by tightening loose, sagging skin and addressing pigmentation issues.
Perhaps most significantly, a mummy makeover has the power to restore self-confidence. With a flatter abdomen and a more sculpted physique, you can effortlessly slip back into your pre-pregnancy wardrobe, without tight clothes leaving unsightly marks or indentations on your body. This newfound self-assuredness extends to swimwear, allowing you to confidently enjoy beach outings once again.
If post-baby weight gain or body changes have dampened your self-esteem when disrobing in front of your partner, a mummy makeover can alleviate these concerns and bolster your body image.
By restoring this sense of self-confidence and self-esteem, a mummy makeover can have a positive impact on romantic relationships and help you reconnect with your pre-pregnancy self.
We invite you to schedule an appointment with one of our expert consultants here at the Cadogan Clinic, where we can discuss how to help you achieve your body goals.
Your surgeon will provide a comprehensive overview of the risks associated with mummy makeover surgery during your consultation, ensuring that you are well informed and prepared.
While the risk of complications is relatively low, as with any surgical procedure, there are standard risks that warrant awareness. These primarily encompass general surgical complications, including:
Your surgeon will discuss the specific risks and potential complications that may be relevant to your case during your consultation, allowing you to make an informed decision about your procedure.
Please be aware that we strongly advise that you do not travel abroad for your Mummy Makeover procedure as travelling abroad for your mummy makeover can be dangerous.
