What are Pectoral Implants

Pectoral Implant surgery, also known as male chest augmentation, is a procedure that enhances the definition and appearance of the chest. Silicone implants are placed under the pectoral muscles to increase the size of the chest muscles, creating an athletic and muscular appearance. Pectoral Implants are also an effective way to address deformities caused by Poland Syndrome or Pectus Excavatum which can be characterised by a sunken chest or underdeveloped pectoral muscles.

The procedure involves small incisions being made under the chest muscles. Solid silicone implants are inserted, and the incisions are closed. There are two main types of Pectoral Implants: pre-manufactured and custom-made. Your surgeon will discuss the type of Pectoral Implants best suited to address your concerns during your consultation. Pre-manufactured implants are suitable for most cosmetic cases, whereas custom implants are often used in cases where deformities are being addressed, and precise anatomical requirements must be considered.

Cadogan Clinic have brought together the leading cosmetic surgeons in the UK, providing the highest-quality surgical care and results. Our award-winning clinic, in the heart of Chelsea, London, has consultation spaces, in-house hospital facilities, and comprehensive recovery and aftercare amenities, providing a central base for your surgical journey.

Before and After Pectoral Implants

During your initial consultation at our cosmetic surgery centre of excellence, your surgeon will show you a range of Pectoral Implants before and after photos. Your surgeon will select images of their previous patients with concerns and desired outcomes similar to your own. This will allow you to see the quality of your surgeon’s work and also the realistic results that are possible. Your surgeon will also show you Pectoral Implants before and after photos from cases which have involved different types of Pectoral Implants to show the differences in results from pre-manufactured and custom-made Pectoral Implants. Before and After Pectoral Implants images are an important factor in deciding on your surgeon, and also whether Pectoral Implant surgery is right for you.

Pectoral Implants vs Chest Wall Implants

Pectoral Implants are a popular choice for men who wish to improve the definition of their chest muscles to create an athletic appearance. However, they can also address concerns arising from conditions such as Poland Syndrome or Pectus Excavatum.

Pectoral Implants are inserted under the pectoral muscles within the chest. In cases where deformities impact the chest more widely, affecting the contours of the outer chest or below the pectoral muscles, Chest Wall Implants (also known as Pectus Implants) are used to address the appearance of uneven chest muscles, or restore chest definition.

What is Poland Syndrome?

Poland Syndrome is a birth defect which is characterised by underdeveloped chest muscles on one side. This can affect the appearance of the chest and nipples, and may also impact the shape and position of the ribs. Although individuals affected by Poland Syndrome typically have normal movement and health, the altered appearance of the chest can lead to a loss in confidence or self-consciousness, especially in activities where patients may need to show their chest, such as swimming or when wearing tight-fitting clothing.

What is Pectus Excavatum?

Pectus Excavatum, also known as funnel chest, or sunken chest, is a birth defect characterised by the sunken or concave appearance of the breastbone and the connecting cartilage. Pectus Excavatum results in the ribs and breastbone being pushed inwards towards the chest, creating a hollowed appearance.

Pectus Excavatum affects around 1 in 400 people and is either apparent from birth or becomes more noticeable due to rapid growth during puberty. In most cases, it is mild, and although it may cause cosmetic concerns, it will not affect health. However, it may reduce lung capacity or impact heart function in more serious instances.

Words from our clients:

Why Do People Have Pectoral Implant Surgery?

Many men dedicate time and energy to diet and exercise to create a desirable athletic and muscular appearance. The chest and pectoral muscles are common areas to target. However, for some individuals, diet and exercise alone are not enough to achieve their desired results. Pectoral Implant surgery is an effective and straightforward method for creating the desired physique, resulting in defined pectoral muscles. This increases confidence and allows patients to fully appreciate the results they have worked hard to achieve.

The wide range of pectoral implants available allows for a bespoke approach, enhancing the shape and volume of the pectorals and creating a natural and flattering appearance to the chest.

Pectoral or Chest Wall Implants are also popular with patients who wish to address chest deformities which are affecting their confidence.

Who Is Suitable for Pectoral Implants?

During your initial consultation at Cadogan Clinic, your surgeon will assess your suitability for Pectoral Implant surgery. They will begin by discussing your concerns and reasons for considering Pectoral Implants before examining your chest and pectoral muscles. Your consultant will also consider your overall medical history, including your physical and mental health, to ensure you are in good health for a general anaesthetic surgery.

To decide whether you are suitable for Pectoral Implant surgery, your consultant will consider:

  • Your concerns – Either having a congenital chest deformity, or difficulty in building chest muscles are typical concerns for considering a pec implants.
  • Your desired outcomes – It is essential to have realistic expectations for what Pectoral Implants can achieve. Your surgeon will explain the results that are possible for you during your consultation.
  • Your overall physical and mental health – Your surgeon will consider your blood pressure, heart rate, weight, and height to ensure you are fit and well for surgery. If you have any mental health concerns, this will also be taken into account. If you are considering pec implants due to a chest deformity, your surgeon will also consider any impact on your health this may have had.

If your surgeon decides that male chest augmentation is suitable for addressing your concerns, they will complete your bespoke surgical plan and send it to your patient advisor. You will discuss your plan, the final surgery price, and surgery dates with your advisor before having a mandatory two-week cooling-off period. You can consider your surgical plan and ask any questions during this time. You can also schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon to speak to them again.

What are the Benefits of Pectoral Implants?

Frequently Asked Questions

The pectorals, also known as the pectoral muscles or pecs, are the muscles that connect from the front of the chest to the upper arms and shoulders. For many men, having defined and well-developed pectorals is desirable, and they may aim to achieve this through diet and exercise. However, in cases where this is challenging or where the shape or size of the pectoral muscles is affected by a congenital condition, Pectoral Implants are an effective and straightforward solution.

As Pectoral Implants are made from solid silicone, they have a longer lifespan than some other cosmetic implants. Many patients find their pec implants last up to twenty years, or even longer, especially when they have been inserted by a highly experienced specialist surgeon. It is important to remember that pec implants can also be removed at any time due to a change in aesthetic preference.

The cost of Pectoral Implants varies depending on many factors. The primary influence on Pectoral Implants cost is the type of implants used. Pre-manufactured Pectoral Implants typically have a lower price, as they are readily available, whereas custom-made pec implants usually have a higher cost as they are bespoke for each patient, and have to be made to order.

The Risks of Pectoral Implants

Before undergoing pec implant surgery, it is vital to be aware of the potential risks and complications. Your surgeon will discuss this with you in-depth during your consultation and will make sure you understand how they may impact your surgery and any steps you need to take to reduce your personal risk. This will include thorough preparation ahead of your procedure, and ahderhence to your surgeon's aftercare instructions to ensure the best possible outcome.

Possible complications that are associated with Pectoral Implants include:

  • Hematoma - This is the build- up of blood beneath the skin and will require treatment from your surgeon
  • Poor wound healing - Healing complications or infection can affect the incision sites
  • Asymmetry - Occasionally, one side of the mons pubis may appear larger than the other
  • Seroma - This is the formation of a lump under the skin caused by buildup of fluid around the incision sites. This will require treatment from your surgeon.
  • Implant complications - In rare cases, Pectoral Implants can be rejected or cause a reaction. This will require further intervention from your surgeon

In the event of a complication or less than optimal outcome, a secondary surgery may be required. The need for a revision surgery can arise due to factors beyond the surgeon’s control. Our skilled consultant surgeons are qualified professionals who have performed BBL numerous times. The need for a secondary surgery is not a reflection of your surgeon’s skill or qualifications.

It is also important to acknowledge that any surgical procedure carries a slight risk of:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Allergic reaction to general anaesthetic
  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a vein)
