Which Conditions Can Affect the Skin?

Ageing can have several effects on the appearance and feel of the skin. Loss of collagen and elastin, sagging, lines and wrinkles and skin quality all influence how the skin, and therefore the overall face looks.

The speed that skin concerns arise, and how severely they develop, can be impacted by external lifestyle factors such as sun exposure, genetics, facial weight changes and nutrition and dehydration. Some skin concerns can occur naturally, due to skin type, such as Dull Skin, Enlarged Pores or Skin Texture.

Here, we look at some common skin concerns, as well as how non-surgical Injectable treatments can be used as an effective option for addressing these conditions to improve the appearance and health of the skin.

Dull Skin

Dull Skin is characterised as skin that looks dry and dehydrated and has lost its natural glow. It may have lost its elasticity and volume and can result in a tired appearance. In some cases, the skin may even look like it has a grey cast, leaving a flat look.

Dull Skin can occur due to many causes. For some people who have naturally dry or dehydrated skin, it may just be how their skin appears. For other people, dull skin can arise as part of the ageing process as collagen and elastin levels in the skin drop, resulting in a loss of volume, which can lead to the skin looking flat and dry.

Having Dull Skin is a common concern and can lead to other skin concerns looking more severe, including skin texture, lines and wrinkles around the eyes such as Crow’s Feet or Under-Eye Wrinkles and Forehead Lines or Glabella Lines.

Enlarged Pores

Enlarged Pores are typically associated with oily skin. Although they are not a medical concern, many people dislike the way it makes their skin look, leaving an uneven appearance.

It is important to remember that it is not possible to open and close pores as many people believe. Instead, Enlarged Pores are usually caused by excess oil in the skin (known as sebum) being excreted, making the pores appear larger. For most people, by controlling the amount of oil in the skin, refines the appearance of the pores. Although they may not actually be smaller, their appearance will be lessened.

However, in some cases, Enlarged Pores can also be caused by a loss of skin firmness which usually arises with collagen and elastin loss, associated with ageing, or dramatic weight loss around the face and neck. This can lead to the pores becoming stretched. As it is not possible for the pores to close naturally, they become enlarged, leading to an uneven textured appearance to the skin.

Having Enlarged Pores can impact the appearance of other skin concerns, making Skin Texture look more severe and, in some cases, emphasising the appearance of loose skin in areas such as the cheeks.

Excessive Sweating

Also known as Hyperhidrosis, Excessive Sweating is a functional concern of the skin, which can cause embarrassment. It can affect any area of the body with a high concentration of sweat glands including the armpits, hands, feet and face.

For the majority of people who experience Excessive Sweating, the underlying cause is the nerves which control the sweat glands sending incorrect signals, causing too much sweat being produced – the exact reason this happens is not fully understood. Other causes of Excessive Sweating can be taking certain medications, hormonal fluctuations, Pregnancy, Anxiety or Hyperthyroidism.

Excess Sweating often leads to self-consciousness. For some people it can also cause physical discomfort which can stem from rashes developing or chafing. This may cause people to stop taking part in activities such as sport or anything that involves a high level of movement.

Loose Facial Skin

Loose Skin can occur in different areas of the face, including under the eyes (as Under-Eye Bags), Saggy Cheeks or around the jawline as Jowls. This can result in an undefined and closed appearance to the face which can make someone lose confidence or change the way they dress or present themselves.

There are a number of factors which can lead to the skin around the face becoming loose. The natural ageing process involves the breakdown of collagen and elastin which can lead to the skin becoming lax and sagging. Alternatively, losing a dramatic amount of weight can have a significant impact on the face and neck. If the skin has become stretched and isn’t able to return to its original position, it will then become loose.

Having Loose Skin around the face can lead to the appearance of Skin Texture being exacerbated as well as Cheekbone Definition and Jawline Definition becoming softened.

Skin Texture Issues

Skin Texture issues occur when the skin is not smooth and toned. This can occur in any area of the face and can lead to self-consciousness which may stop people from taking part in certain activities such as having their photo taken or lack confidence in the way makeup sits on their skin.

Roughness in the skin can have many causes including a natural lack of skin moisture. Other causes that can result in Skin Texture issues are medical conditions such as Acne, Acne Scarring, Rosacea or Dermatitis. Having Enlarged Pores can also give the appearance of textured skin.

Skin Texture can affect the overall appearance and feel of the skin, but it can also make other concerns look more severe such as lines and wrinkles, Enlarged Pores and Dull Skin.

Anti-Ageing Injectables for Skin Concerns

Anti-Ageing Injectables are an effective and popular treatment for many aesthetic skin concerns. By altering the function and structure of the underlying nerve structures with the active ingredient, a neurotoxin, the muscles are relaxed and the appearance and feeling of the skin is improved.

Anti-Ageing Injectables are a highly versatile treatment which can be used to address a number of skin concerns:

  • Enlarged Pores – When neurotoxin is injected into an area affected by Enlarged Pores, the muscles which control the pores relaxes, refining the appearance of the skin. Rather than reducing the width of the pores, the depth of the pores is reduced which lessens their appearance.
  • Excessive Sweating – Anti-Ageing Injectables can also be used to treat certain functional concerns, including Hyperhidrosis. The neurotoxin calms the nerve signals, controlling the activity of the sweat glands and reducing the production of sweat in affected areas of the body.
  • Loose Facial Skin – In cases where Loose Skin in areas such as the cheeks, Jawline and eyes isn’t severe, Anti-Ageing Injectables can have a tightening effect on the skin. This gives a lifted and toned appearance to areas that are affected by sagging.

Anti-Ageing Injectables are a non-surgical and temporary solution to skin concerns. The length of time between top-up sessions varies depending on the areas treated and how quickly the patient naturally breaks down the neurotoxin. For most patients, initially follow-up appointments take place every 3-4 months. With regular treatment, many patients find that the Anti-Ageing Injectables have a compounding effect and top-up treatments aren’t needed as often.

Dermal Fillers for Skin Concerns

Dermal Filler can have a positive impact on many skin concerns. Made from Hyaluronic Acid, which is naturally found in the body, Dermal Filler can be used to add volume to sunken or hollow areas and support loose and droopy skin.

Dermal Filler can be used to treat various areas of skin around the face and has many purposes:

  • Enlarged Pores – For people who are worried about Enlarged Pores that have been caused by the skin stretching due to ageing or dramatic weight loss, Dermal Fillers can be used to create a smooth, toned appearance to the skin. Filler is injected over a few appointments to support the walls of the pores, refining the texture of the skin.
  • Loose Facial Skin – Dermal Filler can be injected into areas of the face such as the cheeks and eye area to lift sagging skin and restore any lost volume, which may be the root cause of the loss of skin laxity. When Dermal Filler has been injected into the areas of Loose Skin it will appear tighter, more youthful and lifted.
  • Skin Texture – As Dermal Filler’s primary ingredient is Hyaluronic Acid, as well as restoring volume and adding support, it can add hydration to targeted areas of the face which are affected by skin texture as well. Many patients report that following Dermal Filler treatment, their skin looks and feels smoother.

Dermal Filler naturally breaks down in the skin, and most people find that the results last for 6-12 months. Depending on the amount of Filler used and the areas treated, follow-up appointments need to take place around every 6 months.

Profhilo for Skin Concerns

Profhilo is an injectable treatment known as a skin booster, which is related to Dermal Filler. Also made from Hyaluronic Acid, it is designed to spread throughout the skin, rather than add volume and support to a targeted area. This increases hydration in the skin, improving skin quality and tone, with more subtle aesthetic results than other treatment options.

Profhilo’s hydrating benefits can help to address a number of skin concerns:

Dull Skin – For many people, Dull Skin is caused by a lack of hydration, either due to skin type or the natural ageing process. Although topical Hyaluronic Acid treatments are available, these aren’t able to penetrate deep into the skin and their effects don’t last long-term, requiring regular application to improve the appearance of Dull Skin. Injecting Profhilo into the skin allows the Hyaluronic Acid to spread throughout the skin at a deeper level than serums are able to reach which gives a higher level of hydration for a longer period of time.

  • Enlarged Pores – Injecting Profhilo into skin which is affected by Enlarged Pores caused by weight loss or ageing, can help to refine the appearance of the skin by increasing the hydration levels and supporting the weakened pore walls to give a more refined result. This treatment is dependent on the severity of the Enlarged Pores and the underlying cause and may not be suitable for everyone. Your consultant will explain the best course of treatment for your Enlarged Pores and whether Profhilo is suitable for you.
  • Skin Texture – Whereas Dermal Filler can be used to increase hydration in targeted areas which also require an increase in volume, Profhilo increases hydration throughout the skin, and has a minimal effect on the contours of the face. Increasing hydration levels in the skin can smoothen rough texture in the skin, making the skin feel more comfortable and look more even.
  • Profhilo is initially administered in two sessions, 4-6 weeks apart. Following this initial treatment the effects usually last for up to 6 months. Maintenance appointments are needed roughly every 6 months to maintain the results of Profhilo treatment.

Aesthetically and functionally, there are many ways the skin can be affected by different concerns. Many of these can be addressed effectively with non-surgical injectable treatments improving not only the appearance and quality of the skin, but also people’s confidence and quality of life.
