What is Hand Rejuvenation?

Our hands are one of the hardest working parts of your body. They age much more quickly than other parts of your body, and unlike your face, are often overlooked when it comes to skincare routines or sun protection. This leads to the idea that if you want to know someone’s true age, look at their hands.

Hand Rejuvenation is a range of treatments and procedures that improve the appearance of the hands. This can include concerns caused by ageing, sun exposure or manual work, all of which can then be exacerbated by lack of ongoing care and maintenance.

Depending on your concerns and your desired results, your consultant will offer you a range of options which can improve the appearance of your hands during your consultation. They will explain what is possible for you and how the available options will improve your concerns.

What Does Hand Rejuvenation Involve?

Depending on the concerns that you have about your hands, there are a number of procedures and treatments available. Your consultant may suggest combining these treatments, or trying a standalone treatment.

Skincare

The first option your consultant may suggest is trying either over the counter or prescription skincare. This is often suitable for treating wrinkly hands or some types of pigmentation. If you begin to maintain your hands early on using regular skincare, you may avoid needing more invasive intervention in the future. Whatever the final solution you opt for, it is important to prevent further sun damage to your hands by wearing sunscreen daily.

Injectables

For concerns such as loss of volume in the hands, deeper lines and wrinkles or a drop in skin quality, injectables offer a range of treatments and solutions with quick results and a relatively short downtime.

  • Anti-wrinkle injections – For patients with deeper lines and wrinkles on their hands which aren’t responding to skincare, anti-wrinkle injections are an effective solution. They work by relaxing the underlying muscles which smooths the visible lines in the skin.
  • Dermal Filler – Fillers are a highly beneficial treatment for patients who have found that their hands have lost volume and look overly veiny as they age. Dermal Filler made from Hyaluronic Acid (a compound naturally found in the body already) is injected into sunken areas, immediately plumping them up and restoring the youthful volume.
  • Profhilo – A common sign of ageing is the skin all over the body becoming more dry and dehydrated, which can cause other concerns such as loss of volume and wrinkles to appear more severely. Profhilo is an innovative treatment which is made from the same ingredient (Hyaluronic Acid) as Dermal Filler, however it has a much thinner texture. This is injected into the skin to hydrate and improve the skin quality, rather than adding volume.
  • Sculptra – As we age, the body produces less collagen which affects the volume of the skin on our hands as well as the quality. Sculptra is closely related to Dermal Filler, but works by stimulating natural collagen production through the injection of Lactic Acid into the skin.

Plasma Treatments

Plasma Treatments use heat energy to create a controlled injury to the skin – stimulating the healing process. This can be used to treat a number of concerns including sagging skin, lines and wrinkles and pigmentation and sun damage. On the hands, Plasma Treatments are especially beneficial for addressing the appearance of the skin, and evening out the skin tone. This can include sun spots and pigmentation caused by UV exposure or ageing.

Fat Transfer

Fat Transfer to the Hands is a treatment which permanently restores volume and makes the hands appear more youthful with more plump skin – reducing the appearance of veins or lines and wrinkles. Fat is extracted from other areas of the body using Liposuction, before being injected into the hands. This is beneficial for patients who are worried about having to maintain the results of Dermal Fillers over time and are looking for a permanent solution.

Which Conditions Can Hand Rejuvenation Treat?

The hands can be affected by a number of concerns and conditions which affect their appearance and make us look older than we really are. This can impact confidence in social and professional life and impact the activities that some people may feel comfortable taking part in.

Pigmentation

Pigmentation concerns can take many forms and have many causes. It is important to understand the cause of your Pigmentation before treatment can begin. Pigmentation can appear as darker or lighter patches on the skin or even a complete loss of pigment in an area. The hands are commonly affected by Pigmentation as they are often exposed to the sun and are harder to shade and protect practically than other parts of the body.

Lines and Wrinkles

As we age the appearance of lines and wrinkles across our body is normal and due to the production of collagen and elastin slowing down. On our hands they may appear faster than other areas of the body as collagen production slowing is associated with sun exposure and also the heavy use that our hands get day to day.

Prominent Veins

As we age, the fat under the skin begins to breakdown and this results in the veins becoming more prominent under the skin. Although this is completely natural and not medically concerning, for some people, it can look unappealing and is often a sign of premature ageing. By filling the sunken areas using either Dermal Filler or Fat Transfer the veins will look less obvious and this reduces the signs of ageing.
