Medically Reviewed 19 April 2024, by Dr. Susan Mayou (GMC: 2405092) - founder of the Cadogan Clinic and one of the world's leading dermatologists
Lip Filler treatment is a popular non-surgical treatment to boost both the shape and volume of the lips via the injection of Dermal Filler.
Lip volume can be depleted leading to a thinner, flatter appearance for a number of reasons, including ageing or weight loss.Wrinkles and fine lines may also appear, contributing to a less toned look with a less defined lip border and a flattened cupid's bow, creating an overall tired and aged appearance.
Lip Fillers can provide a quick, safe and effective solution to reverse these symptoms and deliver improved lip volume and contour.
At Cadogan Clinic, we only use licensed products by JUVÉDERM® or RESTYLANE®. These are made from the naturally occurring substance Hyaluronic Acid to plump up the skin. The Fillers will dissolve over time and are reabsorbed into the body. Temporary Fillers are the safest and lower the risk of any long term side effects from occurring.
The results of Lip Filler treatment can last between 6-12 months, although this varies from person to person. The treatment will need to be repeated in order to maintain your results.
Get in touchLip Filler is a very popular treatment among people of all ages for many different reasons:
Increased lip volume - For people with small or thin lips who don't like how this makes them look, Lip Filler can be used to increase the body and volume of the lips, making them plumper.
Defined lip border - Genetics and ageing can cause the border of the lips (known as the vermillion border) to be undefined resulting in a flat appearance. By using Lip Filler, the lip border can be redefined and the projection of the lips improved. This can be combined with increasing the size of the lips, or as a standalone treatment, where the lips are kept the same size. Defining the vermillion border, and increasing the lips projection, can make the lips appear larger.
Smooth lower face - The lower portion of the face can be affected by lines and wrinkles in different areas due to loss of collagen in the skin. Lip Filler can help to add support into this area, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Enhanced facial proportions - Either having small lips, or the upper or lower lip being larger than the other, can create an unbalanced appearance to the face. Injecting Lip Filler into the area can restore the balance of the face, creating a proportionate appearance.
Immediate results - Dermal Lip Fillers are a popular choice as the results are immediate. As soon as your consultant has completed your injections, you will be able to see your desired results.
Minimal downtime - Unlike surgical alternatives, Lip Filler treatment doesn't involve any recovery time and you will be able to return to your day to day activities, including work, sraight away. It is normal to experience some bruising or swelling for a few days following your treatment, but you won't need to adjust your plans to account for this.
No surgical intervention - Lip Filler procedures don't involve any general anaesthetic or sedation and as there is no surgical treatment involved, there are no dressings or scarring involved.

Lip Border (Vermillion Border)
Dermal Fillers can be injected into the vermillion border to add definition and projection to the lips. This treatment will subtly help your lips to look healthier and more hydrated without dramatically affecting the size of the lips. This can be coupled with other treatments to improve lip volume.
Upper and Lower Lip
Lip Filler can help restore or increase volume to the body of the lower and upper lip. This can be a subtle enhancement or a more dramatic transformation, depending on what you hope to achieve through the treatment. This can improve the proportions of the face and address concerns such as a thin upper lip.
Cupid's Bow
The v-shape contour in the centre of the upper lip is called the cupid's bow. Dermal Lip Filler can be used to contour and add curvature to the natural lip shape. This is a good treatment if you have a flat lip. This can be coupled with Lip Filler injections to the philtrum column for an enhanced result.
Corners of the Mouth
Lines that extend from the corners of the lips down towards the chin are known as Marionette Lines. These troublesome lines can make a person appear sad or frowning. Sometimes these lines can be so severe that saliva builds up in the corners of the mouth, making the area sore. Lip Fillers can soften the lines and better support this area of the face.
Injecting Dermal Filler into the corners of the mouth can also help to lift the outer edges of the mouth creating a more open and happy expression. This is an effective treatment for people who are worried that the outer corners of their mouth droop making them look permanently sad.
Smoker's Lines
Also sometimes known as barcode lines, Smoker's Lines are the vertical fine lines that fan out from the upper lip. These lines are particularly prevalent among smokers due to the frequent pursing of the lips when smoking. These lines can add years to a person’s face and the lack of lip definition can cause lipstick to bleed, drawing further attention to the problem area. Lip border treatment can help to smooth out these wrinkles and redefine the upper lip.
Philtrum Column
The Philtrum Columns are the two raised lines that travel from the upper lip to the bottom of the nose. Some people have prominent, well defined, Philtrum Columns while others are entirely flat above the upper lip, with no natural Philtrum Columns. As we age, we lose this definition as the area above our upper lip gets longer and flatter. Creating a Philtrum Column will add curve and contouring, giving this area a youthful appearance and providing improved support to this part of the face.
Lower Face
The use of lower face treatments can help to improve the lips by providing better support to this particular facial feature. Lower face treatments can help to improve the appearance of nasolabial lines, the mental crease and jaw and chin definition.
Lip Fillers are injected using a very fine needle into the lip region by your qualified consultant, and deliver immediate results.
Typically, a Lip Filler treatment requires one or two vials of injectable filler, depending on your desired results. We only use Lip Fillers based on Hyaluronic Acid at Cadogan Clinic, a dissolvable substance that occurs naturally in the body and is completely safe to use.
Ahead of your treatment, your consultant will have a thorough consultation and assessment with you, to ensure you are suitable for Lip Filler. They may then apply a topical local anaesthetic to reduce any discomfort during the procedure.
The treatment should take approximately 15 minutes. Results can be seen straight away, although there may be some swelling and bruising which can take up to 10 days to subside.
We have invited a selection of the country's very best consultants to join us at the Cadogan Clinic so that you can be sure that whatever the nature of your treatment, you will be seeing one of the top practitioners in the country.
The Patient Journey. What you can expect on your journey with us
You will meet with one of our highly trained cosmetic dermatologists or surgeons at the Clinic on Sloane Street, Chelsea, for a no-obligation in-person assessment.
Get in touchWhat happens to the lip area as we age?
As we age our skin's underlying structure gradually begins to break down and we begin to lose skin volume, elasticity and firmness. This occurs all over the face and body to leave us with lines and wrinkles and sagging skin.
In the lip area, the ageing process is particularly noticeable. Over time lips become less full and plump and begin to lose their definition around the borders both on the top of the mouth (Cupid's Bow) and around the corners of the mouth. Vertical lines and folds also begin to appear around the mouth, particularly among smokers.
Lip filler is a quick, safe and effective treatment for rejuvenating the lip region and restoring a youthful appearance to these age-related mouth and lip conditions.
Who will perform my dermal lip filler treatment?
We only offer consultant-led lip filler treatments, performed by highly trained cosmetic dermatologists or plastic surgeons.
Dermal Filler treatments in the UK are currently unregulated meaning any aesthetic practitioner can perform them. This has led to the proliferation of low quality 'high street' providers, and filler treatments even being made available in non-medical environments such as gyms.
At the Cadogan Clinic, we believe such practices are extremely risky and highly correlated with unsafe and poor aesthetic outcomes.
How should I prepare for lip filler treatment?
It is best to arrive at the clinic with your skin as best prepared for your dermal filler treatment as it can be. This would ideally include not drinking alcohol for 2-3 days prior to your appointment to lessen the risk of bleeding and bruising, as well as having had plenty of rest the night before your treatment to ensure you arrive feeling calm and relaxed.
It is also advised that you do not consume ibuprofen and aspirin for 1 week prior to your appointment as these can also thin your blood making bruising more likely.
Do the lip filler injections hurt?
Dermal filler treatments are generally not painful, although the amount of discomfort you experience may vary depending on the area.
Treatments around the lip are typically the most uncomfortable but the pain can be easily tolerated through the anaesthetic included in the filler and the application, if required, of an additional topically applied anaesthetic cream.
Your lip enhancement treatment should be virtually painless.
Is there any downtime after lip filler treatment?
There is typically no downtime at all.
There may be a slight mild redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or itching which usually subsides after a few hours following treatment - most patients can return to work or to their regular activities immediately after receiving treatment, although we recommend 24hrs before doing any vigorous exercise.
How soon will I see the results of lip fillers?
Dermal fillers work instantly so you should start to see the results immediately, and certainly within the first 48 hours. We typically recommend allowing a week or so before expecting to see the final results, in order to allow for any minor swelling or bruising to subside.
Will my lips look natural after treatment?
The beauty of lip fillers is the results can be as subtle or dramatic as you would like them to be. Our consultants can control the outcome based on a patient’s stated personal preferences. Some patients prefer an extremely subtle change, whilst others may prefer something more impactful.
Either way, your results will look natural, as our specialists will use your natural contours to deliver the very best outcomes. You will also retain a full array of facial expressions after your lip filler treatment.
Are lip fillers permanent?
If you are looking for a permanent change in the shape or volume of your lips, you may wish to consider an alternative treatment, such as fat transfer to face.
Fat transfer to face, also referred to as facial fat grafting, is a surgical treatment that sees fat taken from another area of the body and processed before being reintroduced to the relevant part of the face, in this case, the lips.
This treatment will add volume to the lips and rejuvenate the appearance of the lower part of the face. Your consultant will be able to discuss this treatment option with you in more detail.
Are lip fillers safe?
Lip fillers are extremely safe when delivered by a trained medical practitioner. Outcomes can be managed precisely by a technical practitioner, and results are also not permanent and can be rectified ('dissolved') if they are not to your satisfaction.
That said, whilst extremely rare when fillers are delivered in a medical environment by a medical professional, possible risks include:
These risks will be fully discussed at your consultation.
How long before I can wear lip liner or lipstick again?
We typically recommend you wait at least 12 hours before applying any makeup, lip liner or lipstick. This is because lip filler injections can leave the area feeling tender and bruised and applying any make-up on the affected area may exacerbate this tenderness and cause some discomfort of the lips. When applying lipstick or lip liner, be careful not to put too much pressure on the lips in order to avoid disturbing and moving the lip filler around and risk compromising the result of your filler.
What are my options if I do not like the results?
During your consultation, you will discuss your expectations in detail with your trained medical consultant, so there really should not be any surprise when it comes to the results.
That said, if you are unhappy with the results you are free to revisit the Clinic to see if your concerns can be rectified by the addition of further lip filler, or neutralised by administering a solution that dissolves the filler almost instantly, leaving no lasting damage or effect.
What will happen if I stop having lip filler treatments?
Over time the naturally-occurring active agent in dermal fillers – hyaluronic acid – will wear off.
The filler will be reabsorbed into the body, leaving no lasting damage or effect. Your lips will return to their pretreatment state.
There are some misconceptions that lip fillers stretch your skin, leaving wrinkles and sagging skin behind once the lip filler wears off. There is no truth in this. In fact, dermal fillers can increase the body’s natural collagen production, improving skin laxity and leaving you with younger-looking lips and skin.
If you want to maintain the result of your dermal lip fillers, you will need to visit the clinic for follow-up treatments.
How can I minimise bruising after having lip filler?
Bruising and swelling after lip filler can occur so we recommend following the below guidelines before and after your treatment:
Why does Cadogan Clinic use Juvederm lip filler products?
Juvederm is an extremely popular form of injectable filler, commonly used for lip enhancement; however, it can also be used to treat natural wrinkles and folds in the skin, which are commonly found around our eyes and can appear on our foreheads.
Juvederm is composed mainly of a natural material called hyaluronic acid, which is found in the skin of mammals and is responsible for holding in the skin's moisture. As our bodies begin to age, the skin gradually begins to lose its hyaluronic acid, which in turn, results in thinner and more wrinkled skin. This is often noticeable around the mouth lips and eyes.
Juvederm Lip enhancement is a treatment designed specifically to restore the moisture in the lips to provide fuller and more youthful lips. To achieve the appearance of a more youthful and fuller lip, the Juvederm filler is carefully injected, using a tiny needle, into the desired area and the area surrounding.
Juvederm is made primarily of natural substances, and over time, it will gradually be absorbed back into the body. Once a desired look has been achieved, it is common for a patient to require repeat procedures in order to maintain this more youthful and fuller face.
Initial treatments usually last for approximately 10 – 12 months; however, this can often vary depending on each patient. Due to the nature of Juvederm, and the fact that the effects can be reversed over a long period of time, it is extremely popular amongst patients who have no experience of cosmetic surgery.
