What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers are quick injectable treatments that can soften lines and wrinkles and restore volume in areas that have hollowed to recreate the smooth contours of younger skin.

Dermal Fillers are a very popular treatment with those seeking a swift, non-surgical solution for skin that has either lost volume through natural ageing as the collagen has broken down, or through dramatic weight loss.

Dermal Fillers achieve fantastic, long-lasting results. The active ingredient, Hyaluronic Acid, is naturally found in the skin, tendons and muscles throughout the body and holds shape and hydration in the body's tissues, combating an array of natural ageing symptoms such as lines and wrinkles, nasolabial folds, crow's feet, frown lines and marionette lines. It can also be used to increase the size of the lips and enhance their shape.

Dermal Fillers can also be used to treat some scars including Acne Scarring, as well as other age-related depressions in the skin.

Dermal Fillers are a temporary solution and ongoing treatments will be needed in order to maintain a long-term result. Depending on the type of Filler and the areas treated, most patients need to consider maintenance sessions every 6-12 months.

Benefits of Dermal Filler

Why do people have it & Who is suittable

Dermal Fillers are a popular non-surgical treatment option which can address a number of different concerns:

Smooth lines and wrinkles - Dermal Filler can be used to improve the tone of the skin, smoothing lines and wrinkles. Consultants will regularly combine Dermal Fillers with Anti-Wrinkle Injections to enhance the overall result of the treatment.

Restore volume - It is normal for areas of the face, including the cheeks and temples, to become hollow and sunken as we age or through dramatic weight loss. Injecting Dermal Filler into these areas refills them and restoring the volume and youthful contours of the face.

Reduce sagging - Sagging skin around the face and neck can be caused by weight loss and ageing. As the skin loses volume, this can result in the skin not being supported, leading to a sagging appearance usually around the cheeks or the jawline - known as jowls. Dermal Filler can be administered into these areas to support the skin, reducing sagging.

Immediate results - One of the primary benefits of Dermal Fillers is that you are able to see the results almost straight after your treatment. This allows you the satisfaction of seeing the enhancement immediately.

Minimal recovery time - Although Dermal Filler can cause some short term swelling or bruising in the treated areas, you will be able to return to your daily activities, and working straight away.

No surgical intervention - Dermal Filler requires no general anaesthetic or sedation, and you can carry on your day as normal as soon as you leave the clinic.

What are the different types of Dermal Filler used at The Cadogan Clinic?

There are several different Dermal Fillers available and choosing the right type for you will depend on your desired results and the areas that are being treated.

Cadogan Clinic's consultants only use temporary or 'resorbable' Fillers based on naturally occurring Hyaluronic Acid that dissolves over time, as these are the safest and lower the risk of any long term side effects.

There are many different types of temporary Fillers. Your consultant will choose the filler which is best suited to your needs. As part of your consultation, they will explain why they are using a specific Dermal Filler and the benefits that it has over other options for your individual needs.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we only use the following best-in-class brands:

An industry-leading filler product made by Allergan and the most popular hyaluronic product on the market with over 30 million users worldwide. There are several products in the Juvederm family, each tailored to target specific problems when injected into different parts of the body and to different depths.

Juvederm Fillers vary in terms of the texture and weight depending on the areas they are designed to be used. For example a Dermal Filler which is more suitable for thin areas of skin such as under the eyes will have a thinner texture and weight than one which can be used in areas such as the cheeks.

Another industry-leading filler product, this Filler made by Galderma, and is another exceptionally popular product on the market. As well as tackling moderate to severe wrinkles and folds on the face, products from the Restylane family are also used to treat the signs of ageing on the hands. It is typically used on the nasolabial folds, cheeks, lips and around the mouth.

Which Areas can be Treated With Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers can be used on various areas of the face to restore lost volume and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. The use of Fillers on even just one area of the face can leave the whole face looking rejuvenated and lifted.

Depending on what you hope to achieve, you can have dermal fillers injected into a number of areas in the same treatment.

  • Frown lines - These stubborn lines appear on the skin between and above the eyebrows and above the nose. These are caused by muscle activity when we smile, frown or laugh. Due to their position on the face, these lines can be very prominent and noticeable. Dermal fillers will eliminate any glabellar lines.
  • Brow - Fillers can help to lift the brow, making the eyes appear more alert and refreshed, which can transform the face.
  • Forehead - Fillers can be used to eliminate stubborn forehead creases.
  • Temples - Dermal Fillers will help to reintroduce lost volume to this delicate area.
  • Cheeks - Cheek fillers restore youthful plumpness to this part of the face, lifting the cheekbones and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Cheek fillers can eliminate the problem of sunken cheeks, which are a natural sign of ageing.
  • Nasolabial folds - The two lines that run from the corners of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. These are visible when we smile, but if they are still visible when the face is neutral, then this is when some people opt for fillers.
  • Tear troughs - Tear Trough Fillers can help to refresh and rejuvenate the under-eye area by eliminating dark circles and hollows caused by ageing or genetics.
  • Earlobes - As we age, our earlobes can wrinkle and sag. This problem can be compounded by years of wearing heavy earrings. Dermal fillers plump up the earlobes and help to protect the skin from tearing.
  • Nose - Non-surgical rhinoplasty, also known as the 15-minute nose job, is a quick and effective way of modifying the shape of your nose, smoothing out lumps and bumps or making the tip of the nose more prominent.
  • Marionette lines - These lines run from the corners of the mouth downwards. This gives the appearance of the mouth being pulled downwards in an exaggerated frown. Dermal Fillers will improve the shape of the area.
  • Jaw - This treatment can create a more defined jawline, improving the appearance of a double chin and jowls. On men, this can help to establish a more masculine jawline.
  • Chin - Fillers can either soften the appearance of a prominent chin or strengthen a weak chin, to improve a person's profile.
  • Mental crease - This is the horizontal line between the chin and lower lip, which can get deeper with age. Dermal Filler treatment will remove any lines that may have appeared.
  • Lips - Dermal Fillers can rejuvenate lips that have lost their volume or lack definition. Lip treatments plump up the lips while keeping their shape. Fillers can also be used to contour the cupids bow, the v-shape on the top lip. The philtrum column, that is the two vertical lines running from the nose to the upper lip, can also be enhanced with the use of fillers.

Ageing hands can benefit from dermal fillers. Hands can be affected by the ageing process more quickly than other areas of the body, as they are often exposed and are heavily used. This means they are affected by sun exposure, causing the collagen to deplete more rapidly. As a result, the bones, veins and tendons in our hands become more prominent. Dermal Fillers can be used to fill the areas of lost volume, reducing the appearance of veins and tendons.

Dermal Fillers are frequently used in Non-Surgical Facelifts. This is a bespoke combination of non-surgical treatments designed to tackle common concerns such as wrinkles and sagging skin, without the need for surgery.

The 8 Point Facelift is a non-surgical treatment designed to rejuvenate and lift the face using Dermal Fillers. The eight strategic injection points include the cheekbones, tear troughs, nasolabial folds, corners of the mouth, pre-jowl folds, jawline and lower cheeks. The treatment is a highly effective way of rejuvenating the appearance of the whole face in a quick and simple treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

As we age, natural hyaluronic acid production slows down and this is what causes the skin to age, resulting in sagging and wrinkles. Dermal fillers effectively provide a ‘top up’ of this essential ingredient for healthy skin.

The main function of hyaluronic acid is to attract and retain large quantities of moisture when injected into the dermis (the layer of skin between the epidermis and the subcutaneous layer).

This results in a semi-permanent volumising, or ‘plumping’, effect.

Dermal fillers also help to hydrate the skin, act as an antioxidant and maintain skin elasticity.

Dermal Filler treatments in the UK are currently unregulated meaning any aesthetic practitioner can perform them. This has led to the proliferation of low quality 'high street' providers, and filler treatments even being made available in non-medical environments such as gyms.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we believe such practices are extremely risky and highly correlated with unsafe and poor aesthetic outcomes.

We only offer consultant-led filler treatments, performed by highly trained cosmetic dermatologists or plastic surgeons.

Dermal filler treatments are generally not painful, although the amount of discomfort you experience may vary depending on the area. Treatments around the lip and nose area are typically the most uncomfortable but this can still be tolerated well through topically applied anaesthetic cream.

There is typically no downtime at all.

There may be a slight mild redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or itching which usually subsides after a few hours following treatment - most patients can return to work or to their regular activities immediately after receiving treatment, although we recommend 24hrs before doing any vigorous exercise.

Dermal fillers work instantly, so you should start to see the results immediately. However, it can take a few days for the final results to develop. This is because dermal fillers can cause minor swelling and bruising in the treatment area. We typically recommend allowing a week or so before expecting to see the final results, to allow for this swelling or bruising to subside.

The beauty of dermal fillers is the results can be as subtle or dramatic as you would like them to be. Our consultants can control the outcome based on a patient’s stated personal preferences. Some patients prefer an extremely subtle change, whilst others may prefer something more impactful.

Either way, your results will look natural, as our specialists will use the natural contours of your face to deliver the very best outcomes. You will also retain a full array of facial expressions.

The dermal fillers that we use here at the clinic are only a temporary treatment and usually last between six and 18 months. How long dermal fillers last depends on a number of factors, including the type of filler and where it is injected. It varies from person to person.

When the hyaluronic acid wears off, it is reabsorbed into the body. The treatment process will then need to be repeated.

If you are looking for a permanent result, you may wish to consider a fat transfer to face, a slightly more invasive treatment that uses the body’s naturally-occurring fat to fill out specific areas of the face.

Dermal Fillers are extremely safe when delivered by a trained medical practitioner. Outcomes can be managed precisely by a technical practitioner, and results are also not permanent and can be rectified ('dissolved') if they are not to your satisfaction.

That said, whilst extremely rare when fillers are delivered in a medical environment by a medical professional, possible risks include:

  • Asymmetry, or uneven result
  • Allergic reaction
  • Bruising, bleeding on injection site, swelling
  • Damage to skin and possible scarring
  • Lumps of filler under the skin
  • Skin necrosis
  • Infection
  • Blindness

These risks will be fully discussed at your consultation.

Although there is no evidence that indicates dermal fillers are not safe during pregnancy, the Cadogan Clinic does not perform any injectable treatments on patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If for some reason you are unhappy with the results of your dermal filler treatment, these are easily reversible. The consultant will do this by administering a solution that dissolves the filler almost instantly. It is then reabsorbed into the body, leaving no lasting damage or effect. Alternatively, if you were seeking a more dramatic result, more filler can be added to the treatment area to help achieve your desired result.

It is important that you are open when discussing your treatment goals during your initial consultation.

It is best to arrive at the Clinic with your skin as best prepared for your dermal filler treatment as it can be. This would ideally include not drinking alcohol for 2-3 days prior to your appointment to lessen the risk of bleeding and bruising, as well as having had plenty of rest the night before your treatment to ensure you arrive feeling calm and relaxed.

It is also advised that you do not consume ibuprofen and aspirin for 1 week prior to your appointment as these can also thin your blood making bruising more likely.

We do offer alternative, more invasive volumizing treatments that employ the more permanent volume-enhancing properties of naturally-occurring fat resources. See Fat Transfer to Face.

A vial is a measurement of the injectable liquid administered during dermal filler treatment. Typically, treatment for nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines) requires 1-2 vials, marionette lines require 1 vial, lips require 1 – 2 vials and cheeks require 2 vials.

The cost of your treatment will relate to the number of vials you require during treatment.

Juvederm is made primarily from natural substances, such as hyaluronic acid – which are found in humans. This means a more natural, fuller result is possible when using Juvederm, when compared to some other fillers found on the market.

Juvederm is also highly absorptive, and can absorb up to 1,000 times its own weight in water. This allows the skin to lock in moisture, causing the treatment area to appear fuller, smoother and more youthful.

Since Juvederm is composed of natural substances, the effects are not permanent. This means that if the desired results are no longer required, the substance will be absorbed by the body naturally over a long period of time. Because the Juvederm gradually reduces its appearance, the fillers are a popular and common choice of procedure for patients that have not received any cosmetic treatment before.

Juvederm is not restricted just to the mouth and lip area, and can be used on all of the face and hands.
