What is the Difference Between Breast Implant Removal and Replacement?

Breast Implant Removal surgery involves removing breast implants in the years following a breast procedure. In some instances, the breast implants are then replaced in a procedure called Breast Implant Replacement. It is possible to have your breast implants removed in one procedure and then choose to have new implants inserted at a later date rather than combining the two surgeries.

Breast Implant Removal or Replacement may be done to correct complications such as implant rupture or capsular contracture, or in combination with other procedures, most commonly Mastopexy. Implants can also be replaced to change the size or shape of the breasts if your preferences change with time.

Why Do People Undergo Breast Implant Removal or Replacement?

Breast implants have a dramatic and positive effect on a woman’s appearance and confidence. However, they are not permanent, and breast implants do not last a lifetime – usually needing to be replaced within 10-20 years of your original procedure. Although removing or replacing breast implants is often associated with complications or problems, there are a number of reasons a patient may choose to have Breast Implant Removal or Replacement:

  • Changes in aesthetic preferences – As your body changes over time, it is normal to feel the original breast implants you had inserted may not suit your bodily proportions or be the right shape or size for you anymore. In this instance, you can either have the implants removed entirely or have them replaced with new ones of a different shape and size to better flatter your body.
  • Breast implant rupture or leakage – One risk that your surgeon will discuss with you in your consultation is your breast implants rupturing or leaking. Breast implants can rupture due to age, injury or the shell degrading over time. Signs of implant rupture include:
    • A tight feeling in the chest.
    • A change in feeling or appearance to the breasts.
    • A change in the size of the breasts – in the case of saline implants, this may be very dramatic. With silicone implants, it may not be as apparent.
  • Capsular contracture – The layer of scar tissue which forms around the breast implant (the capsule) can become inflamed, causing discomfort and affecting the appearance of your breasts.
  • Removing the old breast implants, along with the capsule, can alleviate this discomfort.
  • Your breast implants have moved and are now malpositioned.

Does Cadogan Clinic Remove PIP Breast Implants?

There are many different types of breast implants manufactured by different companies.

PIP breast implants were manufactured by a French company - Poly Implant Prothèse. In 2010 the company closed down and it was revealed that they had been using non-approved industrial grade silicone gel in their breast implants, instead of medical grade. This led to a much higher risk of implants rupturing. Many women were instructed to have their PIP breast implants replaced, and since then, many patients have opted to have their implants removed or replaced as they are anxious about the risks associated with them.

Cadogan Clinic’s expert breast surgeons remove PIP breast implants and, if you wish, will replace them with a suitable, safe alternative. Although these issues were revealed over a decade ago, patients with PIP implants are still coming forward, looking for them to be removed.

Cadogan Clinic has never used PIP implants on any of our patients.

Why Do Breast Implant Removal and Replacement Surgery Prices Vary Across the UK?

The cost of Breast Implant Removal and Replacement can vary for a number of reasons. The main factors to consider are the quality of the surgical care and aftercare that you are receiving.

You will find a wide range of prices across the UK for Breast Implant Removal and Replacement. The main reasons for these price differences are:

  • Reputation, experience and quality of the Clinic, Surgeon and specialist Nursing staff
  • Quality of Clinical pre-and post operative care
  • Safety track record of Clinic and surgeon
  • Location of Clinic

Cadogan Clinic’s number one priority is the safety of our patients and providing a high standard of surgical and medical care. We work with the best surgeons and specialist nursing staff at our surgical centre of excellence, based in Chelsea, London.

Words from our clients:

Does Breast Implant Removal and Replacement Cost More in London Than the Rest of the UK?

It is possible that when you are researching Breast Implant Removal and Replacement surgery pricing, you will find there are regional differences, and that the prices in London are higher than the rest of the country.

There are a number of reasons for this, including:

  • Many of the UK’s best surgeons choose to work in the capital, and London also attracts surgeons from all over the world. This means that London has access to the highest calibre of surgeons and the very best talent.
  • The highest quality surgeons wish to work in the best facilities possible. These hospitals offer the best standards of care and also have access to state-of-the-art technology to deliver the most cutting edge techniques and procedures.
  • Top level surgeons want to work with facilities which provide the best quality, the safest standards and the most comprehensive aftercare for their patients.
  • The best talent, plus the best facilities and the best aftercare protocol, leads to better surgical outcomes and a much lower risk of complications, for which a premium is typically paid.
  • Costs of goods and services in London generally tend to be higher than in the rest of the country.
  • The higher cost of living in London leads to companies and service providers having to charge a higher price to ensure their services are comparable to others across the UK.

Are There Other Factors Which Affect the Cost of Breast Implant Removal and Replacement?

There are other factors which will impact the final cost of your surgery. Your surgeon and patient advisor will make sure you fully understand these factors and how they apply to you individually:

  • The extent of your surgery – Breast Implant Removal and Replacement surgeries can vary dramatically depending on the exact treatment needed. If you are only having your breast implants removed, this will naturally cost less than if you are having them replaced. Patients who have experienced certain complications, such as capsular contracture, may also need to factor a capsulectomy into the cost of their surgery.
  • The aftercare provided – When you are considering surgery costs, look into whether aftercare and follow up appointments are included in your surgical package, or if you have to factor this cost in separately. The best facilities will include these costs in your surgical fees, so you know you can rely on being able to access aftercare following your procedure.
  • The surgeon carrying out your procedure – Any surgeon who is carrying out Breast Implant Removal or Replacement must be fully qualified and registered. However, it is also important to consider the surgeon’s experience, the number of procedures they have carried out in their career, and if breast surgery is their specialist field.

What our Breast Implant Removal Patients Say

“I was so very impressed with the staff at the Clinic. They were all so professional, efficient and friendly, and was very convenient that I could have my implants replaced on-site at the specialist facility as opposed to some big impersonal hospital. I would strongly recommend that anyone thinking about breast augmentation (including replacing old/poor fitting implants - as in my case), should take the time to visit and discuss with the team at the Cadogan Clinic"

“Mr Cavale and his team at the Cadogan Clinic were excellent. I am so very happy with the results of my implant removal and would not hesitate to recommend to others.  It is so very easy to choose the wrong medical team, so I would strongly advise on always taking the time to consult the experts at Cadogan Clinic. My implants were safely removed in about an hour and I was at home recovering just a few hours after that. Highly recommend”

“I recently had two procedures done at The Cadagan Clinic. I had my breast implants removed and Liposuction to my upper and lower abs and flanks. From my first consultation with Mr Olivier Amar to the day of my op and aftercare I can only say I received five star treatment. The whole atmosphere at the Clinic was super friendly putting me at ease and all the staff from the receptionists to the nurses to Mr Amar himself was exceptional. The Clinic itself is spotlessly clean and my whole experience was made pleasant and caring. I cannot speak highly enough of all involved, needless to say I would highly recommend”
